Aston Villa will break their transfer record for the second time this summer after agreeing a deal worth up to £26.5m with Bournemouth for Tyrone Mings.
Centre back Mings, 26, spent last season on loan at Villa from the Cherries, helping Dean Smith’s side win the Championship play-offs.
Retaining Mings was a priority for Villa but defiant Bournemouth have played hardball and made the Midlanders stump up more than the £22m they recently paid out for Brazilian forward Wesley.
Mings, who joined Bournemouth for just £8m four years ago, is due to finalise personal terms and undergo a medical in the next 48 hours ahead of becoming Villa’s sixth summer signing.
Smith wants at least one more central defender and are in pole position to land free agent Gary Cahill and bring him back to Villa Park where he began his career.
Villa resume life in the Premier League with a trip to Tottenham on August 10.
