Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has acknowledged that his brutal decision to let go of former goalkeeper Joe Hart is his greatest regret from his tenure.
Guardiola is getting ready to lead his final home game against Aston Villa on Sunday, capping a magnificent ten years at the Etihad. Guardiola stated on Friday that he will depart at the end of the season, as reported exclusively by Daily Mail Sport.
Before saying goodbye, the Spaniard considered the one choice he would make differently: dropping Hart soon after his arrival in the summer of 2016.
Guardiola appeared genuinely moved when he remarked, “I want to confess something,” in an interview with Sky Sports. I regret things. You make blunders when you make a lot of decisions.
However, I have harbored a deep-seated sorrow for a long time.
“I denied Joe Hart the opportunity to be with me so he could demonstrate his skill as a goalie.”

Prior to Claudio Bravo’s arrival, Guardiola benched Hart in favor of Willy Caballero at the beginning of the season. “I (should have) thought, “Okay Joe, let’s try to do it together.” Guardiola told Sky Sports, “If it doesn’t work, we change it.”
And I ought to have. With all due respect to Claudio (Bravo), I should have said, “Okay Joe, let’s try to do it together,” when Ederson entered the room. He was crucial. We alter it if it doesn’t function.
However, it did occur. Sometimes you have to make decisions in life, and sometimes I’m not fair enough.
When Guardiola joined City in 2016, Hart was 29 years old. During his ten years there, he established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League.
He did, however, enter that season fresh off a dismal European Championship in which he committed several high-profile mistakes, notably one for Kolbeinn Sigthorsson’s winning goal in England’s unexpected loss to Iceland in the round of sixteen.
Guardiola publicly questioned whether Hart had the time to adjust to the “sweeper-keeper” style he expects, and the goalie later said that he “had a feeling” from the beginning that he had already made up his mind.
At the beginning of the season, Guardiola benched Hart in favor of Willy Caballero, and the England international was further demoted when Claudio Bravo arrived from Barcelona.
After that, Hart played on loan at Torino for the 2016–17 season. He then had another brief stint at West Ham before securing a permanent transfer to Burnley in 2018.
“I think he signed maybe in February and I was deep into a contract at the club – three-and-a-half, maybe four years left on a deal,” Hart stated in an interview with The High Performance Podcast last year.
“I was dedicated to the club, and they were dedicated to me.” I thought, “Great, I’d love to be a part of that,” but their golden goose was to acquire Pep.
I wish I had stayed and attempted to disprove (him). Last year, Hart told The High Performance Podcast, “But I was living in that world where you want to play for England.”
He brought me in early when he arrived, and I felt like it wasn’t final for me. He’s the type of person I might envision having a talk with before training, saying something like, “I’m looking forward to working with you.” I was a veteran player.
That was not the case. I’m not sure whether that’s how he operates. I didn’t collaborate with him. However, I only sort of connected the dots. He informed me that, despite his admiration for me as a person, he didn’t think I could fit into his system when we stood in front of one another.
“I don’t agree with you, but that’s your opinion,” I responded. Can we work on that jointly, or do I have to look for a new place to live?
“I’m happy to work, but I can’t put everything aside that I’m trying to do; I’m here to win,” he remarked. And I appreciated that. He wasn’t there to support me or offer me a successful career; he was there to win. He wanted a goalie he could trust.
It was annoying. What are you able to do? I wish I could have stayed and attempted to disprove it. However, I was living in a world where playing for England is your dream. It was an unpleasant situation since you cannot play for England while undergoing a trial at a football club.
“I didn’t fit into the man’s vision; it wasn’t a personal attack on me.”
In addition to the club’s announcement that he “will continue his relationship with the City Football Group, by taking up a role as a Global Ambassador,” Guardiola has indicated that he will take a vacation from the game.
