As tempers build, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confronts Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Even though it was only a pre-season friendly, the north London derby on Sunday was tense.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta clashed with Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg during Sunday’s north London derby. Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur met in a pre-season friendly at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to continue their preparations for the 2021/22 season.
Arsenal and Adidas have unveiled their official 2021/22 home jersey, which is based on the club’s motto of “Arsenal for everyone.”
The first half was hotly contested as the two Premier League sides were locked in a 0-0 draw.
The crowd were entertained by an exciting clash between Arteta and Hojbjerg in the 53rd minute.
The Spurs midfielder slipped as he tried unsuccessfully to keep a wayward ball rolling towards the touchline in play.
He almost missed Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who was standing outside his technical box, during the same moment of play.
Hjobjerg and Arteta exchanged words shortly after, with the Spurs player getting up up and personal with the latter.
The fourth official separated the two after the confrontation, as Granit Xhaka led the Denmark international away from Arteta.
After guiding Arteta back into his area, Hjobjerg suggested to the referee that Arteta said something to him.
But the symbiotic relationship was quickly snuffed out, and play resumed in front of a chorus of boos, probably directed at the Spaniard.
