After Luke Campbell was defeated by a technical knockout in Texas, rising American star Ryan Garcia captured the interim WBC lightweight championship. For the first time since losing to Vasyl Lomachenko almost 18 months ago, the Briton returned to the ring and was knocked down in the seventh round by Garcia with a body shot.

Before turning to the paid ranks, Garcia, who compiled an amateur record of 215-15 and is followed by 7.8 million people on Instagram, had to collect all his power for the victory after his 33-year-old rival knocked him down in the second round with a left hook. When a furious combo from Garcia left the clearly wounded London 2012 gold medalist clinging to the ropes as the bell rang, Campbell was all but done for at the end of the fifth round. Garcia was helped by a team that included fellow trainer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who, after a dominant display against Liverpool’s Callum Smith, added the WBA and WBC super middleweight titles to his collection less than two weeks ago. You just boxed a final eliminator to battle him… the fight is now on order – fantastic fight! @wbcmoro @Realdevinhaney @DAZNBoxing https://t.co/F121rqUabS- Eddie Hearn (@EddieHearn) January 3, 2021The victory at the American Airlines Centre in Dallas on Saturday prompted Garcia, who won all 21 of his professional battles, to call for a shot later in 2021 at current WBC titleholder Devin Haney. After the battle, Garcia informed DAZN Boxing, “If we can do Devin, let’s do Devin. Why not? Let’s do it,” Garcia told DAZN Boxing. In response, in a tweet, promoter Eddie Hearn tagged Haney and WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, stating, “You just boxed a final eliminator to fight him… the fight is on order now – great fight!”
