As Lewis Hamilton discusses a promotion, George Russell says that Mercedes has made a choice.

In his pre-Dutch Grand Prix press conference, Hamilton changed his tune and gushed about his colleague, hinting at Russell’s expected switch to Mercedes.

Despite the fact that no official announcement has been made, George Russell knows what automobile he will be driving in 2022. The greatest and longest-running saga of the Formula One silly season has been whether Mercedes will chose the 23-year-old to replace Valtteri Bottas after the Finn’s five-year tenure with the Silver Arrows.

With Russell tipped to be a potential world champion and the Brackley-based team wanting to try something new with Red Bull breathing down their necks in the standings, it’s assumed that’s exactly what Mercedes will do.

Bottas has struggled to win enough races, despite being a reliable performer and a valuable ally for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. This is exactly what Mercedes needs — someone to dominate a Grand Prix when Hamilton is unavailable.

Russell had long been tipped as Toto Wolff’s candidate, since the Williams driver is a Mercedes development driver who has impressed in both his current vehicle and when he was given the opportunity to drive a Silver Arrow in Hamilton’s absence in Bahrain last year.

The 23-year-old revealed that he has been told of Wolff’s ultimate decision during his press conference ahead of this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix.

“The reality is there’s nothing to announce,” he remarked, “but I’m aware of where I’ll be racing next year.”

Things are said to have moved forward in recent days, following Kimi Raikkonen’s retirement announcement, which allowed Bottas to join Alfa Romeo and clinch a position in Formula One for 2022.

Hamilton has indicated his wish for his fruitful cooperation with the Finn to continue on numerous occasions, but he changed his tune at the press conference, implying Russell’s impending elevation.

The 36-year-old was effusive in his appreciation for his fellow Brit, and said he was looking forward to racing alongside her.

Hamilton stated, “I honestly believe [Russell joining Mercedes] would be wonderful.”

“Clearly, George is a really talented driver. I’d say his qualifying lap was probably the single highlight from last week; it was incredible.

“He’s humble, he’s got a terrific approach, and being British, I’d suppose, helps in terms of communication.

“It’s natural for me to be at the moment.”Brinkwire Summary News”.
