As Chelsea prepares to make a major announcement, Rio Ferdinand speaks out on the Romelu Lukaku talks.
Chelsea are close to completing a club-record signing for Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku.
As Chelsea prepares to announce their club-record transfer agreement for Romelu Lukaku, Rio Ferdinand has spoken up about his discussions with the Belgian. Since joining Inter Milan from Manchester United two years ago, the Belgian has flourished in Serie A.
Inter won their first Scudetto in a decade after he scored 24 goals in the Italian top division, impressing many with his turnaround in form while at the San Siro.
Chelsea, who are looking for a new striker this summer, have taken notice of his goalscoring prowess.
After Timo Werner failed to adjust in the Premier League following his arrival from RB Leipzig, Thomas Tuchel has made the position a priority this summer.
Tuchel’s top target was Lukaku, not Erling Haaland, who was considered to be on his shopping list.
At the start of their chase, the Blues had an £80 million player-plus-cash offer knocked down, which included Marcos Alonso.
However, they are expected to finalize a deal with the Italian champions for a club-record cost of £97.5 million.
Lukaku has already finished the first stage of his physical and is expected to arrive in London soon to finalize the deal.
It will be the return of the 28-year-old to his first English club, despite the fact that he was not given the opportunity to shine during his initial tenure.
Following his chats with Lukaku, Ferdinand believes the striker is now “eager” to succeed at Stamford Bridge.
“I recently chatted with him, and he’s a hungry man. He hasn’t confirmed to me that he’ll join Chelsea, but he has stated that he’s hungry this season,” he remarked on the FIVE YouTube channel.
“I just think this man has a lot of greatness in him because he has fuel, which I define as having naysayers and wanting to prove them wrong.
“A whole stadium full of Manchester United fans doubted him, the entire Old Trafford support doubted him. When he left, a lot of people weren’t too disappointed.
“He’ll be sitting there looking at his calendar, trying to figure out when the Old Trafford game is, and he’ll want to unload.”
The former England defender also believes that Lukaku’s arrival makes Chelsea automatic Premier League title challengers.
“Romelu Lukaku will score at least 20 goals for you.” Brinkwire Summary News.
