Arsenal have been chastised for signing the ‘lazy’ Martin Odegaard, with Mikel Arteta threatening to dismiss him.
On Friday, Arsenal announced two more key summer additions.
Paul Merson, an Arsenal veteran, has slammed his former club for signing Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale recently. Both transactions were announced on Friday, drawing mixed reactions from Arsenal fans who are well aware that Mikel Arteta has a big season ahead of him after losing out on European competition for the first time in 25 years.
Odegaard has joined to provide competition in offensive midfield, having joined from Real Madrid for £30 million after six years with the club.
Needless to say, the Norwegian’s time at the Bernabeu did not go as planned, but he has shown enough on his several loan periods to keep him a hot prospect in Europe.
Merson, who played over 300 league games for Arsenal, is pessimistic, writing in the Daily Star: “Mikel Arteta is making a mistake by signing Martin Odegaard – and his position could be jeopardized shortly.
“Arsenal have already lost to Brentford and will now face Chelsea and Manchester City.
“They could finish last in the league, and I don’t think the board would stick with Arteta for long if he has a difficult stretch.
“If Odegaard had truly intended to join Arsenal, he would have joined when his loan was over. He, on the other hand, refused to join them. He desired to return to Real Madrid.
“He didn’t exactly cut down any trees on the side of the road, did he? He only managed to score two goals! I believe it is a blunder. I believe that is yet another sloppy signature.
“No other Premier League club was interested in him. Nobody else is attempting to sign Aaron Ramsdale.
“I’m not sure if it’s Arteta. But whoever it is, Arteta will pay the price if everything goes wrong.
“Anything can happen when Arsenal plays Chelsea this Sunday, but I believe my old club is in for a big few weeks.”
This summer, there was rumored to be interest in James Maddison and Houssem Aouar, but Odegaard has finally been given the nod after serving his apprenticeship on loan last season.
His time in north London was criticized by some after he only scored once in the league, but his previous loan with Real Sociedad showed that he can be one of the most inventive players in the league. “Brinkwire News in Condensed Form.”
