Arsenal and Tottenham were both interested in a Lautaro Martinez transfer in the summer.
Lautaro Martinez has seemingly made a decision on his Inter Milan future in what could be a major blow to the transfer plans of Arsenal and Tottenham. Martinez was a transfer target of the Premier League pair in the summer but a move did not materialise.
Arsenal and Spurs both wanted to sign a new forward as they prepared for the 2021-22 season.
Spurs were particularly keen to add a striker to their squad given the interest in star player Harry Kane. The England captain eventually remained at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
It was widely reported that the Lilywhites agreed a £60million fee with Inter for Martinez but the Argentine turned down their approach.
Arsenal also hoped to sign Martinez. However, the 24-year-old was not part of the Gunners’ big-spending summer.
Both clubs could look to sign Martinez in either the January or summer transfer windows but might find a deal harder.
Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has revealed that the forward is close to signing a new contract and could put pen to paper within the next two weeks.
“We are going to announce his extension within ten days,” Marotta told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“He is the future of Inter and we want to keep him at the club.”
Martinez entered the final two years of his current contract during the summer and the Serie A side are keen to tie him down to an extension.
He helped them win the Scudetto under Antonio Conte last term and has enjoyed a successful start to the new campaign.
Five goals in six Serie A appearances have helped Inter to third in the Italian top-flight, with the player shouldering the scoring burden left by now-Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku.
Martinez’s agent ended the chances of his client departing during the summer transfer window.
Alejandro Camano insisted that Martinez wants to remain at Inter for the foreseeable future.
“He wants to win the Scudetto again with Inter, play a good Champions League with the Nerazzurri and he doesn’t think at all about leaving Italy,” Camano told FCInterNews in August.
“We will do everything possible to stay with the Nerazzurri.
“Martinez is very happy in Milan, he has an excellent relationship with his. “Brinkwire Summary News”.
