Andy Carroll provided a much-needed boost for Newcastle with a superbly-taken opener in Tuesday’s friendly against League One Crewe Alexandra.
The Magpies were back in action after a turbulent summer and the failed Saudi-backed £300million takeover of the club.
And Carroll opened the scoring in the 39th minute.

Jamaal Lascelles floated a long ball to the striker, who then chested it, headed it, flicked it with right foot and on the turn volleyed home with his left without the ball hitting the deck.
Christian Atsu doubled their advantage just after half-time when he latched onto a pass from fellow substitute Dwight Gayle and slammed the ball home.
Federico Fernandez completed a 3-0 victory when he headed home from Barlaser’s corner to cap a dominant second-half display.
Steve Bruce fielded completely different sides in each half of their first pre-season friendly on Tuesday.
