Allan Saint-Maximin’s amusing transfer request for Lucas Digne to Fabrizio Romano

Newcastle United have been linked with a slew of new signings in January, and Allan Saint-Maximin joked that the Magpies might be interested in Everton defender Lucas Digne.

Newcastle United has flexed their colossal financial muscles for the first time.

Kieran Trippier, the reigning La Liga champions’ defender, was the first player signed under the new ownership at St James’ Park when he signed a £12 million deal from Atletico Madrid.

However, the former Tottenham Hotspur star will most likely be the first of many to arrive, as Newcastle’s new owners are by far the wealthiest in the Premier League.

As a result of their newly acquired wealth, the club has been linked with a slew of top stars and players from across Europe.

Allan Saint-Maximin, the Magpies’ star player, wanted to be certain about the club’s chances of signing Everton defender Lucas Digne, so he reached out to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

Digne will leave the Toffees, but not for Newcastle, according to Romano, who has 6.2 million Twitter followers.

He tweeted, “Lucas Digne will leave Everton, never been in doubt.”

“Three Premier League clubs are interested; the next week will be crucial – Chelsea has yet to make a decision on the LB situation.”

“Digne will not join Newcastle once more.”

No way – and Lille still wants Sven Botman.”

While Romano appeared to be confident in his statements, Saint-Maximin gently suggested that the transfer insider double-check his sources.

In response to the transfer guru’s news, Saint-Maximin tweeted, “Ok Fabrizio, just to clarify, is Lucas Digne going to join Newcastle?”

While Saint-Maximin’s joke was amusing, Newcastle are no laughing stock in the transfer market.

Lille defender Sven Botman and Seville centre-back Diego Carlos have both been linked with a move to Howe’s side.

Howe’s wish list appears to include a new defense, as his Newcastle team continues to leak goals like they’re on a daily basis.
