After tumbling out of the Citi Open, Rafael Nadal shares an update on his foot issue.
The world number three was defeated 6-4 1-6 6-4 by Lloyd Harris, the world number 50.
Rafael Nadal lost in three sets against Lloyd Harris at the Citi Open, a surprising defeat for the Spaniard. After missing Wimbledon and the Olympics due to a foot injury, the Spaniard entered the tournament for the first time in his career.
Nadal fell behind in the first set to the courageous 24-year-old, but rallied back to force a decider by soaring through the second set and winning 6-1.
Throughout the final set, the two were neck-and-neck, with the world number three failing to convert an early break point as the South African continued to back himself and go for his shots.
With no breaks of serve in the third set, the 20-time Grand Slam champion was still in the match when he served at 4-5, but Harris pounced, breaking Nadal’s serve and winning the match.
Following an upset at Roland Garros, where he fell out in the semi-final, this was only the Spaniard’s second match in almost two months.
He then withdrew out of Wimbledon and the Olympics, later claiming that he was forced to withdraw due to a left foot issue that kept him out of both competitions for 20 days.
The former world number one entered the Citi Open earlier than normal to begin his North American hard court season, and he made his debut in Washington on Wednesday in another third-set fight against American Jack Sock (August 4).
After his second-round triumph over the world number 192, Nadal revealed that he was still in discomfort in his foot, but he minimized the ailment and stated he would be ready to fight against Harris.
Despite the fact that the 50th-ranked player won, Nadal appeared to be in good spirits and felt he performed better than the day before.
Despite losing the match, the Spaniard stated it provided him with the “greatest news” that his foot was improving.
“The most encouraging thing is that my foot is doing better today than it did yesterday,” he remarked.
“I had to play against a very good player. I think I played better today than I did yesterday, until in the third when I had.”Brinkwire Summary News”.
