Former Celtic defender Adam Virgo claims that at a packed Ibrox Stadium, Shane Duffy would have fought even more against Rangers – as he was a bundle of nerves behind the scenes.
Since his loan from Brighton, the Irishman has been strongly criticized, as some bad performances in a Hoops jersey were a cause for concern. Any bad passing and a potential red card for Ryan Kent didn’t do anything to improve Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the Gers.
Virgo knows what it’s like to play – and to struggle – at Celtic, having signed himself in 2005 for the Hoops. And he claims that if manager Neil Lennon fails to sign a defender this month, Duffy could play his last game in green and white.
In front of a full crowd [at Ibrox], I don’t even want to think what Shane would have been like,”I don’t even want to think what Shane would have been like in front of a full crowd [at Ibrox],” I think it would have been ten times worse for him. When he came on against Rangers, he looked like a nervous mess. Those things can happen, as they did to me.
Unfortunately, so many errors were made by Shane that led to goals. Neil is going to be very courageous to hang on to him. I don’t think Shane would tell you that he didn’t get a chance.
Virgo also claims that Duffy would not succeed in returning to the Brighton team, from where he was loaned to Celtic, and after his tenure at Parkhead comes to an end, he will search for another club.
“I don’t see Shane going back to Brighton because he’s not going to make the squad,” he said. In the League, other clubs will take him. I guarantee he’ll be taken to Nottingham Forest by Chris Hughton, who had him at Brighton.
“Knowing Lenny as I do – and he’s a really loyal guy – he might have to look Shane in the eye and say that’s all he can do unless he can’t get anyone else and has no other choice.”
