After failing to land a £30 million target, Newcastle discovers Samuel Umtiti’s transfer terms.

NEWCASTLE are looking for central defenders to help them avoid relegation.

Newcastle United may be able to sign Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti in the January transfer window after the defender changed his mind about moving this month.

Newcastle United are looking to bolster their squad in order to avoid relegation from the Premier League, and Umtiti has been rejected by Sven Botman.

The Magpies are currently in 19th place in the league, two points from safety, having won only one of their 19 league games this season.

Eddie Howe’s side has only kept one clean sheet and conceded 42 goals, prompting the club’s new owners to focus on defensive signings.

After flying to Newcastle on Wednesday to complete a £12million transfer from Atletico Madrid, Kieran Trippier will be the first arrival of the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund-backed era.

The focus will now shift to central defense, where the Magpies are thought to be after two players.

According to The Telegraph, Lille has rejected Newcastle’s £30 million bid for Netherlands Under-21 international Botman.

Botman is reportedly not for sale at any price this month, despite interest from Newcastle and AC Milan.

Because of their resolute stance, the Toon may opt to sign Umtiti from Barcelona instead.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, the 28-year-old defender would be willing to join the Premier League club on loan until the end of the season, with no option to make the deal permanent.

Umtiti reportedly turned down five separate offers to leave Barcelona, but has since changed his mind in order to earn a spot in France’s World Cup squad in 2022.

Newcastle is willing to pay half of his staggering £220,000-per-week salary to bring him in as part of their relegation fight.

Umtiti joined Barcelona from Lyon in July 2016 and has since made 133 appearances for the club, helping them to win two La Liga titles.

Xavi has frozen out the French World Cup winner, who has only made 41 appearances in the last three seasons.

Umtiti is looking for regular game time as he attempts to reclaim his place in Didier Deschamps’ Qatar squad.
