After continuous phone calls from Anfield stars, Glen Johnson says he snubbed Chelsea for a move to Liverpool.
Top Liverpool stars used a charm attack to persuade Glen Johnson to reject Chelsea in favor of a move to Anfield.
As he evaluated his choices in 2009, the ex-Reds right back recounted how players like Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso called him to shout the club’s praises.
Johnson was playing for Portsmouth at the time and was being pursued by a number of other major clubs, including his former club Chelsea and Manchester City.
However, the effort made by Liverpool talent in approaching him convinced him to relocate to Merseyside.
“If a team like Liverpool comes knocking, you certainly have an eye on it and an interest,” Johnson told the Liverpool Echo.
“But what made the difference was when we played for England that summer, right before I signed, and I had a good chat with Stevie” (Gerrard).
“After that, I spoke with Torres and Alonso before signing.” These were just some of the top players in the world, in my opinion.
“They didn’t have to call me, but they did to tell me how much they wanted me to join.”
“I felt like I knew them straight away, and it made me feel extremely comfortable before I signed anything, and everything just felt perfect.”
In a £17.5 million transfer, the England international joined Liverpool and went on to make 200 appearances for the club.
During his time in the North West, he won a solitary Carling Cup as new owner John W. Henry began about transforming the club into the powerhouse it is today.
And he never got to play alongside Alonso, who left Liverpool for Real Madrid despite his best attempts to persuade Johnson to join him.
