Just one year after winning the Premier League, Arne Slot and Liverpool parted ways.
Reluctantly, the Reds have decided to rebuild after realizing that their title defense was unsuccessful.
This season, Slot finished sixth after losing 20 games. Fans revolted, and a number of important players, including the now-departed Mohamed Salah, criticized the team’s style of play.
In a recent social media post, Salah made reference to Klopp’s “heavy metal attacking team,” which was largely interpreted as a jab at Slot.
“He leaves with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation,” Liverpool added, confirming that the hiring process for a new manager had begun.
The front-runner to succeed him is Andoni Iraola. Richard Hughes, who is now sporting director at Liverpool, welcomed the former Bournemouth manager to the Premier League. Iraola, 43, has had discussions with several clubs throughout the continent.
Just a year after winning the Premier League, Arne Slot and Liverpool have parted ways.
The front-runner to succeed the Dutchman is Andoni Iraola, who recently left Bournemouth.
After spending an unprecedented £415 million on transfers in the summer, Liverpool barely made it into the Champions League.
This was true even if Florian Wirtz’s £116.5 million agreement and Alexander Isak’s £125 million contract both broke the British transfer record.
However, Wirtz found it difficult to settle despite his stellar reputation coming from Bayer Leverkusen, and Isak missed a significant portion of the season due to injuries.
Although Slot would cite Giovanni Leoni’s season-long injury on his debut as a mitigating factor, Liverpool were also found to be poor at the back, giving up 53 goals in the league.
Additionally, Slot had to deal with Diogo Jota’s passing last summer, which Liverpool’s team has often described as a traumatic event.
Furthermore, neither Jeremie Frimpong nor Milos Kerkez have been able to duplicate Trent Alexander-Arnold’s creative influence from full-back, and Slot had little control over his departure after 20 years at the team from the age of six.
Additionally, Liverpool failed to duplicate their Champions League success under Klopp, losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals and last 16 under Slot.
Being a legendary character in Liverpool’s history, Klopp was never going to be easy to duplicate.
Many supporters had considered Xabi Alonso to be the ideal replacement, but Iraola is now regarded as one of the front-runners after leaving Bournemouth to join Chelsea.
After periods at Larnaca, Mirandes, and Rayo Vallecano, Iraola has never managed a club of Liverpool’s caliber, despite leading Bournemouth into the Europa League and setting up his teams with an appealing style.
There will be more to come.
