After a long exhibition fight, Floyd Mayweather concedes to Logan Paul.
After failing to finish YouTuber Logan Paul in an exhibition battle in Miami, Floyd Mayweather intimated that age may have played a role.
In their eight-round exhibition match at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Mayweather was largely expected to toy with the taller, heavier, and less-experienced YouTuber.
Despite being the far more competent boxer in the ring on Sunday night, the undefeated great was unable to land the knockout punch that would have cemented his victory against the tenacious vlogger.
Mayweather claimed that the YouTube sensation had surprised him with his ring smarts during a rough encounter in which Paul regularly tied up Mayweather to avoid taking clean strikes from close range.
He remarked after the match, which had no official winner, that he had a good time.
“You have to understand that I’m no longer 21 years old, but it’s fun to hang out with these young people and put my talents to the test.
“A fantastic young boxer, tough and powerful. He’s a lot better than I expected.”
Mayweather predicted that Paul would have difficulty continuing his boxing career against boxers of comparable size, but praised his inexperienced opponent for putting up a tough fight in front of a large pay-per-view audience.
“It’s going to be tough (for him) with the big guys, the heavyweights,” he said.
“However, he’s a strong competition.
“It was exciting, and we had a nice time.” He pleasantly surprised me tonight.
“Nice small piece of work. He’s a good man. I had a good time.”
The conversation then went to what Mayweather might do next, with a rematch with Conor McGregor a possibility, while Paul’s younger brother, Jake, has made no secret of his desire to fight the 50-0 great.
But the Las Vegas native remained tight-lipped about his future plans, implying that his age may be affecting his performances.
“I battled a heavyweight, but it was a lot of fun,” he remarked.
“Even though he didn’t have a lot of experience, he knew how to use his strength and tie me up tonight.
“But I had a good time, I’m sure he did, and hopefully the fans did as well.
“I’m not 21 anymore, but I had a good time.”
