1:0 Celtic Rangers: Old Firm Derby – How It Happened

Red card for Nir Bitton and an own goal from Callum McGregor gave Rangers a 19-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership

Here is the report from Ewan Murray at Ibrox.

Man of the match Allan McGregor speaks.

I thought we were really very poor in the first half. Then came the sending off and we were a bit better after that. The victory is the most important thing. They looked hungrier in the first 50 minutes, but we managed to get the win. You have to be focused and ready.

I was annoyed with how bad we were, but I keep repeating myself. The victory is the most important thing.

It’s not a pretty sight for Celtic fans.

It’s nirvana for Rangers supporters.

Dundee Utd

Cheers for Rangers.

Everything hinged on Nir Bitton’s rush of blood to the head, and his rash tackle on Alfredo Morelos was almost immediately followed by a Callum McGregor own goal.

Celtic had been the better team, but now stare down a Rangers win.

90+3 min: Time ticks down to Ten In A Row.

Nothing more to come of this.

90+2 min: Scott Broon makes an Auld Firm tackle on Aribo, and that only wastes time. That was Aribo’s last contribution, Barker comes on for him.

90 mins: Elyounoussi takes the corner. It’s cleared. There are four minutes of stoppage time and Celtic look absolutely desperate.

89 min: Celtic get a throw-in deep in Rangers territory.

It’s a hail mary situation now.

Rogic fires a shot that is deflected.

88 min: Rangers are sitting at the back now and keeping their shape well.

A free kick chance and Duffy goes up again. Elyounoussi shoots the ball in but Itten clears.

87 min: Rangers make a change: Ryan Kent comes on for Zungu, the South African international.

86 min: Frimpong’s pass into the penalty area misses its target. Celtic’s incisive passing game in the first half is but a distant memory.

Steven Davis is now in full control of the midfield.

84 min: The change is made, Rogic comes into the game.

A misplaced pass gets away from Frimpong. The fire seems to have gone out for Celtic.

83 min: Rogic comes into the game for Celtic. They need something from him. They need something from someone. They are devastated.

81 min: Terrible action from Duffy, who passes the ball straight to Ryan Kent. He makes amends with a nice block, but that’s the story of Duffy at Celtic. Whatever happened to the reliable veteran of Brighton and Ireland? A remarkable decline.

79 min: Celtic get a free kick in a good position.

Duffy prances in, he must be good for something.

But McGregor’s chip is poor and the Rangers line holds firm.

78 min: What can Celtic find? They’re being pushed back. Impressive how Rangers cut into the opposition after losing a man.

76 min: It was a shocking tackle from Duffy. He just swung his leg and kicked his opponent. Itten comes on for Rangers as Morelos goes off before being sent off. He has yet to score a goal in the Old Firm derby.

74 min: Here comes the chaos. Elyounoussi goes close and then Shane Duffy gets a yellow card for a tackle that riles up the Rangers players.

Morelos – of course – gets a warning for his involvement.

So does Celtic’s McGregor. That’s about it, then.

73 min: More changes for Celtic. Scott Broon and Hatem Elhamed come on for Ryan Christie and Ismaili Soro.

71 min: Bitton’s red card has completely changed the game and possibly – probably – ended hopes of ten straight wins. Tavenier’s ball was great, but some questions about Celtic’s defending.

McGregor was unlucky.

The corner comes from Tavernier, and it comes from Callum McGregor after Aribo’s flick. No one can clear on the line and Rangers have the title trophy in hand already!

69 min: Free kick for Rangers.

Steven Gerrard claims it and gets it.

The ball comes from the edge of the penalty area.

Barasic takes it and whips it in.

Duffy heads the ball well away from the wall.

67 mins: The game is changing significantly now, Celtic are now sitting at the back.

Duffy clears a ball from Ryan Kent for the first time. Eduoard is now a lone striker for Celtic and must try to buy time for the defense.

65 mins: Shane Duffy, who has yet to prove himself, replaces Griffiths.

David Turnbull also has to go off, Elyounoussi replaces
