A SENIOR SNP MP has cautioned activists that it would ‘horrify the international community’ to hold an illegal referendum without the UK government’s approval.
Pete Wishart also indicated that failure “would lack any democratic legitimacy” and “would be boycotted by the Tories.” to hold a legally binding referendum on Scottish independence.
The MP for Perth and North Perthshire replied to a petition calling for a “independence plebiscite” by the Independence for Scotland party in May’s Holyrood election, which Wishart described as a “pop-up indy party” receiving less than one percent of the vote.
I have seen a petition from a pop-up Indy group for a “plebiscite” that gets less than 1 percent of the electoral vote. Why would anyone sign a deadlock that wouldn’t get us to Indy, boycott the Tories, have no political legitimacy, and frighten the international community?

SNP MP Pete Wishart: To get Indyref2, Holyrood will ‘crush’ Westminster
Less than 2,000 individuals have signed the petition so far.
“We are calling on the SNP and Scottish Greens, who support Scottish independence at Holyrood, as well as other political parties in Scotland, to make the Scottish elections on May 6, 2021, a plebiscite.” said Colette Walker, chair of the Independence for Scotland party.
“This is a democratic process that is recognized by the international community and is a way to legally and legitimately determine the opinion of the Scottish people.”
She added: “It is not correct that their voices should be silenced at such a crucial point and on issues that will affect people’s employment, welfare and freedom.”
“In Scotland, the people are sovereign and it is time they were given the right to speak.”
“He added on Twitter: “Why would anybody sign up for a stalemate that can’t get us to Indy, boycott the Tories, have no political legitimacy, and frighten the international community? ”
“He said, “I can imagine that we will go to the international community and say, ‘Listen, gentlemen, we had a plebiscite.’
I’m sure you wouldn’t mind if it was uncontested, that there was no ‘no’ plan, that the state we want to leave is ignoring it, and that it’s of questionable legality.” “They’d be laughing their heads off.
If Boris Johnson continues to resist repeated demands for a re-run of the 2014 referendum, the SNP has come under criticism for failing to outline an alternative path to independence so far.
Mr. Wishart said he was confident a second independence vote would be given to the Scottish people by the British government.
They are already planning for it,” he said, “and the smarter people know that a “no” vote is untenable and cannot be held.
“In the meantime, they will ‘defiantly’ say ‘no’ in the hope that impatience and division will beat us for them.”
