“She said in a Vogue magazine interview, “I was a high school student, and I had dated guys in jeans and clogs and T-shirts, and he came to the door and wore a sports coat and loafers, and I thought, “God, this is never going to work, not a million years from now.” He was nine years older than me!
Joe’s first wife, Neilia, and the thirteen-month-old daughter of the couple, Naomi, died in a car crash three years before Jill met her.
Beau and Hunter, their sons, survived the disaster.

Dr. Biden, who identifies herself as an introvert, was born Jill Jacobs in 1951 and is the eldest of five sisters and grew up in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, outside Philadelphia, with Bonny and Donald Jacobs.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Biden has been an educator, receiving a doctorate of education from the University of Delaware in 2007. She also holds two master’s degrees, which she obtained while working and raising a family. She proceeded to teach English full-time at a community college in Virginia while she was Second Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. She has previously said she plans to teach English full-time at a community college in Virginia

In 1975, Dr. Biden met future U.S. President Joe Biden and they married in June 1977. Mr. Biden’s first wife, Neilia, and infant daughter, Naomi, died in a car crash in 1972 that also injured their surviving sons, Beau and Hunter. Before giving birth to daughter Ashley in 1981, Dr. Biden helped raise the two boys. More than 40 years later, at age 46, Beau died of a brain tumor in 2015.
Dr. Biden describes herself on her Facebook profile as a “lifelong educator, military mother, grandmother, sister, author and wife.” As Second Lady, she brought focus, among other items, to the sacrifices made by military families, highlighted the value of community colleges, and raised awareness of areas of special interest to women, including screening for breast cancer.
