But Ms. Harris’ campaign’s early pledge vanished and she dropped out of the White House race, instead backing her former opponent, Mr. Biden.

This summer, he chose the California senator as his running mate, making history by naming the first black woman to run on the presidential ticket of a major party.

Born in 1964 to a Jamaican-born father and an Indian-born mother in Oakland, California, Ms. Harris said that her mother, who was an activist and scholar, influenced her to fight inequality.

She started her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office after graduating from Howard University and then attending law school at the University of California.

She won her first election in 2003, when she became a district attorney in San Francisco, and when she was elected attorney general of California in 2010, she became the first female and black woman to hold office.

She rapidly gained notoriety for her assertive questioning of Trump administration officials during congressional hearings after being elected to the Senate in 2016.

With the slogan “Kamala Harris For the People,” a nod to her role in the courtroom, the 56-year-old unveiled her presidential campaign in early 2019.

In a crowded Democratic primary, she was one of the highest-profile candidates and drew 20,000 people to her first campaign rally in Oakland.

Ms. Harris unexpectedly withdrew from the race in December 2019, two months before the primary’s first votes were cast, facing fundraising issues.
