WWE Rumors: May John Cena Face Kurt Angle In WrestleMania 35 Retirement Match?

When Kurt Angle announced on “Monday Night Raw” that he would retire after WrestleMania 35, one name stood out among a large portion of wrestling fans as a possible opponent for the WWE Hall of Famer. John Cena might make the most sense to face Angle when he laces up his boots one last time at MetLife Stadium on April 7.

Cena and Angle are two of this biggest WWE stars of the last 20 years, and neither one is penciled into a WrestleMania 35 match. It had been speculated that Cena might challenge Samoa Joe for the United States Championship, but that match isn’t on the latest rumored card.

The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer reported a week ago that Joe vs. Cena was not in WWE’s plans.

Angle, a four-time WWE champion, deserves a proper send-off at WWE’s biggest show of 2019. With the WrestleMania 35 card taking shape just weeks before the event is set to take place, the list of potential notable opponents for Angle isn’t very long.

A match against a heel like Baron Corbin or Bobby Lashley could be an option for WWE. The same goes for Drew McIntyre, though Monday’s show appeared to set the path for McIntyre to meet Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.

Angle teamed up with Ronda Rousey to beat Triple H and Stephanie McMahon at WrestleMania 34. It was his first WrestleMania match in 12 years.

Cena has barely been featured on WWE TV since he lost to The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34. He didn’t even participate in the 2019 Royal Rumble and was last seen on the Jan. 1 edition of “SmackDown Live.”

Because he isn’t tied to any storyline, Cena can easily come back and work a program with Angle. Whether it was his intention or not, Cena only fueled rumors that he might face Angle by posting an old photo of the wrestler on Instagram Tuesday morning.

Cena debuted nearly 17 years ago when he faced Angle on “SmackDown.” It would only be fitting for Angle to have a rematch in the final WWE match of his career.
