It was one of the first videos of its kind to become viral worldwide in the early days of social media, and it has since received millions of views.
A typical woman is seen encountering a cat while strolling down a typical street. The cat leaps up from the pavement to a garden wall in an attempt to get closer, seemingly friendly and attention-seeking.
After giving the cat a few strokes while looking around, the woman abruptly snatches it by the scruff of its neck. Then, with astonishing skill, she opens the lid of a nearby wheelie bin, tosses the cat into, closes the bin, and walks away as if nothing had happened.
However, something had happened: Mary Bale, a 45-year-old single bank employee at the time, had permanently altered her own life.
Because the Daily Mail has discovered that Ms. Bale has never really recovered from the widespread criticism her unexplained behavior sparked, which was so intense that she is still referred to as “Cat Bin Lady” worldwide.
Even though she still resides in the same Coventry area, she has become such a hermit that many of her new neighbors are unaware that they share a home with someone who was an international outcast in 2010 and is still recognized as such.
The Daily Mail decided to reexamine the 16-year-old case after discovering that Lola, the cat she threw away as trash, had a long and contented life undisturbed by the events of that day and passed away from old age approximately five years ago.
However, since then, Mary Bale’s life has never been the same.
In 2010, Mary Bale, a 45-year-old single bank employee, caused a stir worldwide when she picked up Lola the cat from a garden wall, placed her in a wheelie bin, and shut the lid.
One of the first videos of its kind to go viral, the video infuriated animal lovers all around the world, making Ms. Bale from Coventry an unfortunate international pariah.
After being dubbed the “Cat Bin Lady,” Ms. Bale expressed her “profoundly sorry” for what she described as a “split second of misjudgement.” A court fined her £250.
Lola, the cat she threw in the trash, lived a long and contented life, seemingly unaffected by what had occurred to her that day, and passed away from old age around five years ago.
Ms. Bale, who lives alone and had to quit her work at a bank due to the controversy, is now somewhat of a recluse and has never really recovered from the criticism her unexplained behavior caused.
She was initially unrepentant, claiming that people were overreacting and that she “did not deserve to be hated” for her moment of insanity.
I don’t understand why everyone is so enthusiastic. “It’s just a cat,” she remarked. This cat wandered out in front of me as I was making my way home from work. It was perched on a garden wall while I played with it, caressed it, and listened to it purr. It was really amiable. I’m not sure what struck me, but I thought it would be amusing to throw it in the wheelie bin next to me. I thought it would be humorous, so I did it as a joke. It never occurred to me that it might be trapped. I thought it might crawl out of the trash can.
“People are reading too much into things,” Bale continued. I don’t have any strong opinions about cats. Although I don’t own pets, I don’t mind those who do.It’s astonishing that this video is being viewed all across the world. I wish to avoid upsetting any family members because I’m a pretty private person. I’m not sure what my family will say, but to be honest, I think everyone is overreacting a little. “Okay, I shouldn’t have done it, but it’s just a cat at the end of the day.” It was only a moment of insanity, so I don’t think I deserve to be despised by people everywhere.
However, Ms. Bale expressed her “profoundly sorry” for “a split second of misjudgment” as public outrage grew and a Facebook group advocating for her death was formed.
“I want to take this opportunity to apologize profusely for the upset and distress that my actions have caused,” she said in a statement. “I cannot explain why I did this, it is completely out of character and I certainly did not intend to cause any distress to Lola or her owners.” “It was a split second of misjudgment that has completely out of control.” “I wish to reiterate that I am profoundly sorry for my actions and wish to resolve this matter to everyone’s satisfaction as soon as possible.”
Ms. Bale completely withdrew from public life after receiving hate mail and death threats, some of which called her “worse than Hitler.”
A neighbor who was present when the story broke and has known Ms. Bale since then is one of the few persons who still see her on a regular basis.
Speaking to the Daily Mail on the condition of anonymity, she said, “Mary has never gotten over her notoriety. She was vilified by people across the world.” She doesn’t feel forgiven, even though most people have long since moved on. “She resigned from her job in the aftermath of the furore and never reestablished a proper career.”She now lives a very peaceful life and hardly ever communicates with anyone. I believe she is still incredibly ashamed and believes it is all she will ever be recognized for.
Mother-of-two and pet owner Diana, another sympathetic local, stated that the regrettable event had “plagued Mary over the years and she had never been able to live down the shame.”
“She struggles sometimes, and I do feel sorry for her,” she continued.
Diana, who has a dog and cat, stated that she believed Mary would be “relieved” to hear that Lola had lived a long life.
Following the August 2010 event, it was discovered that Ms. Bale’s father had suffered a fall and was in severe health at the time. He would pass away soon before his daughter was required to appear in court.
This was hinted to by a third neighbor, who stated: “Obviously it was a strange thing for her to do, but when learned that her father was dying at the time—he passed just a few months later—it was clear she was not in a good place at the time she did it.” Most of us who are aware of her are sympathetic.
After being stuck inside the trash can for fifteen hours, Lola’s owners, Darryl and Stephanie Mann, who both still reside in the area, saved their cherished four-year-old tabby.
They were shocked to see how she got there when they looked at the CCTV camera, and they angrily uploaded the video to the internet.
Footage from front door mounted security cameras was considerably more of a novelty in the days before Ring doorbells and similar gadgets were widely used. The couple later stated that they were shocked by how the video had taken off.
Prior to the couple adopting her as a family pet, Lola was a stray. She passed away from old age in 2021, but her passing has not yet been made public.
Despite the bin tragedy, it is known that she led a “very nice life.”
This week, the Manns declined to discuss her passing. It is believed that they have pardoned Mary.
The RSPCA eventually launched a private prosecution against Ms. Bale, which took place in the city’s magistrates court that October, despite the police’s initial refusal to intervene.
A second allegation of failing to provide the cat with a proper environment was dismissed, and Ms. Bale entered a guilty plea to causing needless suffering to a cat.
Although she did not know the cat’s owners, the court heard that she had previously met and petted Lola despite living a few blocks away.
“Ms. Bale, daily, almost hourly, for the past two months has asked herself that very question,” her attorney added, adding that his client was unable to provide an explanation for her behavior.
She had been compelled to leave her bank position after 27 years, he said.
District Judge Caroline Goulborn considered the demonization Ms. Bale had endured and stated that although there had been a “substantial” risk of injury to the cat, she had not actually been harmed.
“I understand you were in a stressful situation, but that’s no excuse for what you did,” the judge continued.
After being seen on camera hurling a cat into a wheelie bin, Ms. Bale was taken into custody on August 25, 2010.
Ms. Bale attended the annual dinner at Edgbaston Golf Club in April 2007 while she was a member of the Birmingham Bach Choir. This week, she was not accessible for remark.
Ms. Bale was fined £250, forced to pay £1,171 in costs, and prohibited from owning or caring for animals for the following five years.
Since the ban ended twelve years ago, it is believed that she has not made any attempts to have a pet.
Ms. Bale is not available to remark.
Her precise location and other private information have been left out of the Daily Mail.
