What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has instructed Man Utd about matching Jose Mourinho’s pay packet

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER will be appointed permanent Manchester United boss on less than half the wages Jose Mourinho was earning.

United are still refusing to confirm if and when Solskjaer will get the job.

But when they do, it will be on fraction of what his predecessor was on.

Solskjaer is understood to be willing to accept a deal of around £7m a season in comparison to the £15m a year plus that Mourinho was raking in.

That still represents a huge pay rise for Solskjær who was on just £400,000 a year at Molde before being made United’s caretaker boss in December.

But he has told Old Trafford chiefs the honour of managing the club he loves is more important to him than matching Mourinho’s mega pay packet.

United will insert a lucrative bonus scheme into Solskjaer’s new deal relating to winning trophies and the team’s Premier League position.

Although officials remain tight-lipped on Solskjaer’s immediate future, his coaching staff and squad are just waiting for the appointment to be confirmed.

Romelu Lukaku, who scored twice in Wednesday’s stunning 3-1 win at Paris St-Germain, has urged United to make it official as soon as possible.

He said: “I know he’s going to stay, there’s no doubt about that.

“He wants to stay, the players want him to stay. We’re doing really well, we’re playing like Manchester United should play.

“I think it has been decided. I think he has going to get it, he should get it. What else does he have to do?”

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward had been planning to make his decision in June and was considering Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri as potential long-term replacements for Mourinho.

But he has been left with no choice but to appoint Solskjaer following his amazing impact, which culminated in Wednesday sensational comeback in Paris to book a Champions League quarter-finals against the odds.

United were 11 points adrift of fourth in the league and going backwards when Mourinho was axed.

But since replacing him on an interim basis Solskjaer has lost just one game from 17 in all competitions.

United have closed the gap on fourth placed Arsenal to one point and reached the last eight of the Champions League and FA Cup.

He has also restored the confidence and form of senior stars like Paul Pogba, Lukaku and Anthony Martial.
