Wayne Couzens, the assassin of Sarah Everard, was sentenced to life in prison today at the Old Bailey.

As Sarah Everard’s family looked on, Lord Justice Fulford handed down the sentence to Wayne Couzens.

Ms Everard was abducted while walking home from a friend’s house in Clapham, south London, on the evening of March 3.

After seizing Ms Everard under the guise of a bogus arrest for violating lockdown regulations, he strangled her with his police belt.

The seriousness of the case was deemed “exceptionally severe” by the court, warranting a life sentence.

“Wayne Couzens, you kidnapped, raped, and murdered Sarah Everard, having long planned a horrific sexual attack on a yet-to-be-selected victim whom you meant to compel into your custody,” Lord Justice Fulford told him.

“You have irreversibly harmed Sarah Everard’s family and friends in the ways that I have, at least in part, mentioned.

“Mrs Everard described how the outside world has lost its allure for her and, I’m sure, many others who cared for your victim, and Sarah Everard’s sister spoke of the inevitable reality of the many lives you have wrecked.”

“It is vital that every citizen in our country be able to trust police officers and submit to their authority, which they have the right to think is being exercised in good faith.”
