West Ham news: Manuel Pellegrini desperate to revive Jack Wilshere’s career

MANUEL PELLEGRINI will not run Jack Wilshere into the ground but wants to help him make a speedy return to the England set-up.

West Ham’s new boss made the injury-plagued midfielder the first of his nine summer signings when Arsenal decided they could not gamble on his fitness any more.

Pellegrini remembered Wilshere well from his previous time in England – when he led Manchester City to the title – and jumped at the chance to lead his Hammers revolution.

The Chilean is determined to wrap him in cotton wool and restore his fitness, skills and the strength that once marked him out for greatness.

Pellegrini said: “First of all he is only 26 and been unlucky with injuries.”

“I have plans for him. We are always talking”

“As a manager you can work in lot of different tactics, systems, but if you don’t have good players it is impossible to be a good team.

“In the eight, nine years he played for Arsenal he showed he’s a different player. So if the injuries respect him, alone he will make the difference to us.

“I have plans for him. We are always talking. Maybe he will not work the same as the rest of the squad. But I am not scared about that because the last two seasons he played a lot of games, at Bournemouth then Arsenal.

“He’s a young player and he knows his body and I hope that he will be fit for the most part of the season.”

Wilshere is hoping a move to West Ham can restore his footballing career

“Every day we have the players on the GPS and we know the most amount of metres that he does before he has a rest. So, that with the fitness coach and the sport science, we will manage his work.

“Maybe with resting, he will run more in games than other players.

“I am confident we can make him an England player again. Technical players make the difference and Jack is the special kind of player that can make different things.

“So in the way if he continues playing every weekend his performances will get better and I am sure he will have an option to return to England.”

Pellegrini begins his latest Premier League adventure at Liverpool today (sun), a club that once interviewed him when he had just left Real Madrid.

He claimed then he wasn’t ready, preferring a move to Villarreal and then Malaga to hone his skills, leaving Liverpool to appoint Roy Hodgson.

But he is relishing today’s trip to Anfield, a place where West Ham haven’t won since 1963.

He said: “You have to play there sometime and we are ready. I have no regrets not joining them. My career would have been different if I joined them.”

“It was Manchester City when I came here to England after three years with Malaga, three beautiful years that shaped my career.

“Liverpool are a great club, but I also had the options to manager some very big clubs also.”

He openly admits he jumped at West Ham’s offer to return to England. “After two years in China, it was good to come back. I have always said this is the best league in the world.

“My championship winning medal is in a good place in my home in Chile. It would be nice to add another. Let’s see.”
