Ukrainian top prosecutor announces resignation amid scandal over activist’s murder

KIEV, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) — Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko announced on Tuesday that he would resign amid a scandal over the murder of Ukrainian anti-corruption activist Kateryna Handzyuk, local media reported.

“Today, I will submit my resignation to Ukrainian president; the parliament should also consider this issue,” Lutsenko was quoted as saying by Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

Handzyuk, 33, died on Sunday after more than three months of treatment in hospital since July 31 when she was attacked with acid.

The slow progress in investigating the attack against the activist has sparked widespread public anger, with many people demanding the resignation of Lutsenko and Interior Minister Arsen Avakov.

Lutsenko, a long-term ally of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, was appointed as Ukrainian Prosecutor General in May 2016.

The resignation of the top prosecutor must be accepted by the country’s president and approved by the parliament.
