Two men have faced court after being arrested at a CBD apartment in Melbourne where another man fell to his death.
Jacky Tran, 25, faces a theft charge relating to a BMW car and drug offences, while Oner Atesok, 33, is accused of stealing a Honda Civic, possessing stolen tools and mail and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
Atesok, who did not have legal representation, told Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday he had never stolen a car and that most of his run-ins with the law were for “petty” offences involving illicit drugs.
“I just want to get bail so I can go home to my kids,” he said.
The father of two made a bail application but was denied.
The court heard Atesok was already on bail for other offences including drug trafficking and identity theft when police arrested him at the A’Beckett Street apartment block on Friday.
Some of the matters were to do with the discovery of 22 identity cards such as drivers licences and Medicare cards in a car along with a black-handled tomahawk, the court heard.
Bulleen man Jacky Tran told the court he couldn’t get his “usual lawyer” and declined to apply for bail after being informed media were reporting on the case.
A third man, referred to in court only by his last name, Stantopoulos, was arrested by police but later released.
A fourth man was seen fleeing officers when they entered the building and searched an apartment just after 6am on Friday based on reports of stolen vehicles.
However he was found dead, apparently having fallen from a balcony.
He is yet to be formally identified.
A woman also linked to the stolen cars remains on the run.
Tran was remanded in custody to reappear in court on Monday and Atesok will appear in court again on September 17.
