TRANSGENDER: Karen White has since been moved to a male prison

Karen White, 52, has since been moved out of HMP New Hall to a male prison.

Details of the sex offences emerged as she appeared before Leeds Crown Court.

She was pleading guilty to a historic rape which took place in 2003 – and she was in jail on remand charged with three rape offences on a woman between February and December 2016.

White was born David Thompson and began to identify as a woman four years ago while living West Yorkshire.

She insisted she was not attracted to females and suffered erectile dysfunction.

“Her penis was erect and sticking out of the top of her trousers”

Prosecutor Charlotte Dangerfield

Prosecutor Charlotte Dangerfield told the court White first struck while in New Hall in September.

She said: “The defendant would stand very close to her, touch her arm and wink at her.

“Her penis was erect and sticking out of the top of her trousers.”

The second allegation also dates from September last year when allegedly White struck up a conversation with another inmate.

Miss Dangerfield said: “She made inappropriate comments about oral sex, which made the complainant feel sick.

“She took hold of the complainant’s hand and put it on the defendant’s left breast – she could feel her padded bra.”

On a third occasion in October, White again made inappropriate comments about oral sex to another prisoner, a court heard.

She said: “She gave her a bear hug and the defendant pushed her hips towards her with such force that the complainant could feel his penis.”

And then one month later, White is accused of kissing another inmate on the neck.

Judge Christopher Batty adjourned sentencing until October 11, for the preparation of reports and to obtain victim personal statements.

He wanted to assess the “dangerousness” of White – who is now banged up in HMP Armley.

All her previous offences had been committed when she was a man – and had not had gender reassignment surgery when she went to New Hall.

White pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of two New Hall Prison but not guilty to sexually assaulting two other female inmates – those charges will now lay on file.

Ministry of Justice guidance says in the “great majority” of cases transgender prisoners are allowed to ‘experience the system’ in the gender in which they identify.

A spokesman for the Prison Service said: “We apologise sincerely for the mistakes which were made in this case.

“While we work to manage all prisoners, including those who are transgender, sensitively and in line with the law, we are clear that the safety of all prisoners must be our absolute priority.”
