TOTTENHAM are ready to break their transfer record in a bid to sign Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa although the midfielder hopes yo join Chelsea, according to reports.
Mauricio Pochettino is desperate for new faces through the door in north London with Tottenham having gone two transfer windows without signing a player.
The Argentine knows his side must bring in new signings in the summer if they want to challenge for the Premier League title.
And top of his wishlist is talented midfielder Chiesa, according to The Sun.
Chiesa has made a name for himself in Serie A and the 21-year-old’s displays have clearly caught the eye of Spurs scouts.
However, along with facing competition for his signature from the likes of Juventus and both Milan clubs, Spurs will have to spend £70m to secure his signing.
That fee would eclipse the club record £42m they paid for Davinson Sanchez in the summer of 2017.
Fans will be hesitant chairman Daniel Levy would be willing to fork out such a huge fee for Cheisa, who can play in central midfield and on the flanks, given his lack of spending in the previous two windows.
However, the report claims Levy could be prepared to smash their club transfer record in his bid to keep Pochettino happy.
Pochettino has been strongly linked with a move away from Wembley in recent months with his name being linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United.
And Levy knows landing his top target would huge in his bid to keep Pochettino at the club.
Chiesa is thought to be keen on leaving Fiorentina but he would reportedly prefer a move to Chelsea.
That news won’t go down well with Spurs fans with the young talent keen to link up with Maurizio Sarri.
However, due to Chelsea recently being handed a transfer ban, a move to Stamford Bridge for Chiesa could now prove difficult.
The Blues have been banned from registering new players until January 2020 for breaking rules over the signing of foreign under-18 players.
Chelsea deny any wrongdoing and have appealed against the decision.
