Today’s Birthday 26/7

Today’s Birthday, July 26: American Actor Kevin Spacey (1959 – )

Kevin Spacey is accustomed to controversy – but 2020 is taking it into another realm.

Days before his 61st birthday, the world awoke to a photograph of the enigmatic American actor and the late Jeffrey Epstein’s ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell sitting on thrones at Buckingham Palace.

The 2002 snap was taken during a private palace tour with former US president Bill Clinton hosted by Prince Andrew, according to London’s Daily Telegraph.

Just before it resurfaced, Maxwell, a British socialite and alleged accomplice of American financier and convicted sex offender Epstein, was arrested on sex trafficking and perjury charges in the US.

Kevin Spacey Fowler was born in South Orange, New Jersey, in 1959 and grew up in Southern California, taking the stage in school productions.

After trying his hand at comedy, he enrolled in drama at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City.

The year after graduation, he appeared in his first Broadway production and maintained a life-long love of theatre even as he moved into television and film.

Becoming known as a character actor, he scored bigger parts and critical acclaim in movies like Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) that culminated in a starring role in The Usual Suspects (1995) and an Oscar for best supporting actor.

He went one better in 1999, claiming the Academy Award for best actor in American Beauty.

Spacey moved to London in 2003 to become artistic director of the reputable Old Vic theatre, directing two productions and starring in nine.

In 2011 The Horrible Bosses star was cast as ruthless politician Frank Underwood in House of Cards, claiming a 2015 Golden Globe for best actor.

He starred in 2017 film Baby Driver and hosted that year’s Tony Awards.

Spacey was later accused by multiple people of sexual misconduct, which sent Hollywood entities into damage control and Netflix fired him from the hit House of Cards series.

In a bizarre YouTube video in 2018, the actor, apparently inhabiting his Frank Underwood character, told viewers: “I’m certainly not going to pay the price for the things I didn’t do.”

By late 2019 the charges against Spacey had been dropped but he has stayed out of the spotlight.
