Michael Thompson is making a strong bid for his second career PGA Tour victory.
The 35-year-old was in possession of a four-shot lead while on the back nine in the third round of the 3M Open in Blaine, Minn., on Saturday.
Thompson recorded his fourth birdie of the round when he knocked in a short putt on the 12th hole to sit at 16-under. He made three in a row earlier in the round at Holes 5, 6 and 7.
Thompson’s lone PGA victory was at the 2013 Honda Classic.
Max Homa was the clubhouse leader after registering a 7-under 64 in his third trip around TPC Twin Cities. Homa’s total was 12-under 201.
The 29-year-old had eight birdies and one bogey on Saturday. The bogey came on the par-3, 17th hole.
South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli was making a move up the leaderboard on the back nine. Also in the mix were Tony Finau, Talor Gooch and Richy Werenski.
Werenski was tied for the lead with Thompson entering Saturday’s play. The 28-year-old is looking for his first career victory.
Among early finishers, Cameron Tringale (63 on Saturday), Denny McCarthy (64) and Sweden’s Alex Noren (66) are at 11-under 202.
Charles Howell III (67) and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo (64) are at 10 under after Saturday’s round.
