The popularity of fancy-dress happy funerals featuring magicians, fireworks, and Monty Python is on the rise.
The UK is experiencing an increase in “happy funerals,” in which grieving is considered as a celebration of life, with fancy dress, magicians, and fireworks replacing conventional black garb and somber music.
The British funeral has changed dramatically in recent years, with more people requesting “pleasant funerals.” The general tone is perceived as more upbeat, the music is sillier, and the outfits are brighter today more than ever. Phrases like “a celebration of life” are showing up more than ever.
Monty Python’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” was the 10th most requested funeral music in 2019, according to Co-op Funeralcare, which also included classics like Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” and Robbie Williams’ “Angels.”
According to a Co-op Funeralcare survey, 74 percent of its funeral directors have received requests for bespoke, unique flower tributes during a service, and 64 percent have been asked to arrange personalised coffins. Rainbow and even leopard pattern coffins have been requested!
According to Sarah Jones of Full Circle Funerals, there has been a significant increase in joyous funerals, as well as some fancy dress.
“We have supported families who have chosen to have live music and dancing, invited others to attend in fancy dress, and invited guests to share a joke and watch a magician performance,” she said.
“The choices are unlimited, and it’s a true honor to assist individuals in planning a funeral that truly reflects the person’s personality and ideals.
“We advise individuals to consider the tone of the funeral they are planning. Following the trend of cheerful funerals, some people are opting for ‘cremation fireworks,’ which include a portion of your loved one’s ashes and allow you to send them off in style.
“I would just like to offer a massive thank you to all the team at Heavenly Stars Fireworks,” one client said in a testimonial for Dynamic Fireworks. We gave my partner a proper send-off, and his children felt it was the nicest. It’s something we’ll never forget for the rest of our lives.”
