It was hard to believe the guy accused of attempted murder was the son of Hollywood’s most successful marriage when he was staring blankly across the courtroom with devil-horn tattoos in his fading hairline.
Actor Ryan O’Neal and actress Farrah Fawcett’s only kid, Redmond O’Neal, has been incarcerated for five years at the infamous Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino, California, after allegedly going on a week-long crime spree in Santa Monica in 2018 and slashing a number of innocent individuals.
Redmond, 41, “plunged a knife three and a half inches into his brain,” according to one claimed victim.
The 62-year-old Tatum O’Neal is now speaking up about her troubled half-brother and their dysfunctional family.
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, she added of her sibling, “He’s doing very poorly, honey, very poorly. I love Red dearly, but he’s gotten heavy.” He didn’t even start a genuine life.
Redmond O’Neal was charged with attempted murder in May 2018 and appeared in court in March.
O’Neal is the sole child of renowned actors Ryan O’Neal and Farrah Fawcett, who were photographed together at the 2003 Malibu’s Most Wanted film premiere. He has never altered. “Drugs, drugs, drugs,” she remarked. “It was a horrible start with my dad Ryan, who wasn’t a very good person; with Redmond, he was cruel and repeatedly hurt him.”
“It was cruel and terrifying.”
As the daughter of the Love Story movie star, Tatum has spent years battling her own problems.
She spoke to the Daily Mail from the San Fernando Valley memory care facility where she is recuperating from a severe stroke caused by a prescription medication overdose in 2020.
For the majority of her adult life, Tatum—who won an Oscar at the age of eleven for co-starring with her father in the 1973 comedy-drama Paper Moon—has battled severe drug addiction. In the 1990s, she even lost custody of her three children with tennis great John McEnroe.
She also had a serious warning regarding her sibling.
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, actress Tatum O’Neal broke her silence about her troublesome brother, stating that he’s doing “very poorly.”
In 2011, Tatum’s half-brother accompanied her to a ceremony when they handed artefacts associated with Farrah Fawcett to the Smithsonian Museum. Tatum has personally battled addiction.
In 2001, Fawcett was photographed in Vienna with her kid. The 62-year-old actress passed away on June 29, 2009. “I don’t know if he’s going to try to kill himself,” she remarked.
Redmond’s long-time attorney, Dana Cole, disagrees, telling the Daily Mail that his client has improved from his early days at Patton and is not suicidal.
Cole remarks, “He’s a different person today.” He has been taking medication, attending regular treatment sessions, and not using drugs. He treats others with respect.
Griffin, Ryan’s 61-year-old eldest son, also discussed the dysfunctional family with the Daily Mail, saying, “We’re still alive, me and Tatum, but we shouldn’t be.”
Gian-Carlo, the son of Francis Ford Coppola, was killed in 1986 when the boat he was operating struck a towline, according to Griffin’s extensive criminal history.
In May 2018, Redmond was arraigned on a second amended criminal charge related to an alleged crime spree in the Los Angeles courthouse. He now has devil horn tattoos on his head.
O’Neal was shackled when he entered the courtroom.
He was accused of domestic abuse and later served time in prison for a drunk driving collision.
He did not receive an invitation to his father’s burial.
In fact, Ryan’s shortcomings as a husband and father have been the subject of the majority of O’Neal family anecdotes during the previous forty years.
Following a disagreement over a racquetball match in Bel Air in 1983, he struck Griffin in the face, knocking out two of his front teeth.
After a fight at his Malibu house years later, Ryan discovered that Griffin had shackled Redmond down to prevent him from going out to do narcotics, leading to his imprisonment.
Ryan fired a shot at the bannister as Gryphon started swinging a fireplace poker.
The 41-year-old has a past filled with court troubles and drug misuse. Booking images from 2008 show him.
A criminal charge of possessing methamphetamine was brought against the father and son in a Malibu court in 2008.
Joanna Berry O’Neal, Griffin’s ex-wife, suffered injuries during the altercation.
There was much more pandemonium than just that one occurrence. Family members claim that attempts at rehabilitation were frequently thwarted and drug use was normalised in the home.
David Leit, who became Redmond’s 12-step sponsor in 2001 when he was sixteen, said, “Ryan was a raging narcissist, really crazy.”
“I enjoyed Redmond.” He had a punk, aggressive, and truly addictive attitude, yet he was also hilarious and compassionate.
Ryan removed Redmond from treatment programs early and permitted drug usage in the home, according to two sources who spoke to the Daily Mail. One family insider claimed that Redmond was “used as a pawn.” “Ryan was envious of his own son.”
At the age of ten, Tatum won an Oscar for co-starring with her father in the comedy-drama Paper Moon in 1973.
Following in her father’s footsteps, Tatum abused drugs and, in the 1990s, lost custody of her three children with her ex-husband John McEnroe.
When Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies visited Ryan’s Malibu house in 2008 to check on Redmond’s parole, they discovered methamphetamine in Ryan’s nightstand drawer.
The father and son were both taken into custody. Ryan subsequently entered a treatment program and entered a guilty plea to a lower crime.
Long seen as the more stable mom, Farrah Fawcett made an effort to stop her son’s ordeal.
Craig Nevius, Farrah’s former producing partner, stated, “Farrah went to extraordinary means to protect him and get him on the right path.”
Redmond found a man she thought was selling narcotics to him when he was a teenager, confronted him with boxcutters, and reported him to the police.
When his buddies arrived, she also insisted on looking for them.
Griffin O’Neal, Tatum’s brother, also discussed the family’s turbulent past, telling the Daily Mail:Tatum and I are still alive. However, we shouldn’t be
Nothing was effective.
Redmond’s drug addiction and outbursts only became worse.
Fawcett was already in detention in 2009, when he was near death from cancer.
In the documentary Farrah’s Story, he showed up at her bedside in shackles—a scene that friends claimed she would not have wanted made public.
Around that time, Redmond was visited at the Twin Towers jail by long-time Access Hollywood producer Markus Farhan, who remarked, “When I met him he was just totally lost.” He didn’t have a name. Everyone in his immediate vicinity either wanted to keep him high or sell him narcotics.
From 1979 until 1997, Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal had a protracted, intermittent relationship. In 1995, they were photographed with Redmond.
In the past, Redmond has attributed his issues on his parents, who did not get married during their tumultuous 30-year relationship.
At the age of 82, Ryan passed away from leukaemia in 2023.
Patrick, a 58-year-old sportscaster, is the only one of his four children who has not been affected by the drama that consumed the rest of the family.
There are indications that the O’Neal family’s next generation is trying to stop the cycle.
Emily, Tatum’s 34-year-old daughter, is an actress, and Sean, her 38-year-old son, is married, has two children, and has experience as a photographer.
Kevin McEnroe, a 39-year-old novelist and Tatum’s eldest son, was married last year after overcoming a severe drug and alcohol addiction six years ago.
He and his mother are now close despite a challenging upbringing that he describes in his Substack, Serenity Side Down.
Redmond is charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of felony attempted murder, and second-degree robbery after allegedly robbing a 7-Eleven at knifepoint.
He might be imprisoned for the remainder of his life if found guilty of the attempted murder accusation.
Tatum informed us that she has a message for her half-brother and that she is working on a Netflix series about her stroke and recuperation.
“I adore you, Red,” she declared. “You are everything and the most beautiful man.” I have faith in you.
