The markets are alarmed y Rayner’s socialist “sh**show” takeover plot, while Starmer attempts to salvage himself with anti-Brexit remarks

As Keir Starmer fights to save himself today, markets are prepared for Labour to shift sharply to the left.

Angela Rayner’s collaboration with Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and her program of increased taxes, giveaways, and nationalisations have caused anxiety.

One of the primary ways the government borrows money, 10-year gilts, saw an increase in interest rates this morning.

As the PM’s hold on power wanes and scores of MPs publicly demand his removal in the wake of terrible local elections, rivals for No. 10 are circling.

If a “vision” address at 10 a.m. doesn’t put an end to the mutiny, he might be challenged by a “stalking horse” contender for leadership as early as today.

By pledging to go further in undoing Brexit, Sir Keir will attempt to placate the Labour rank-and-file.

However, following several failed “reset” attempts, expectations are low and he is not believed to be making significant policy pronouncements.

While former aides cautioned that it will be a “head in hands” moment, MPs have warned that the pro-EU message will be met with a “cup of cold sick” in the Red Wall.

Starmer’s desperate supporters have been alerting backbenchers to the possibility of an early general election in the event of his removal.

In response to concerns on the Left that Blairite Wes Streeting is in a strong position to succeed Sir Keir in the event of an imminent contest, Ms. Rayner took action last night.

Mr Burnham is not presently an MP, and the former deputy prime minister is still at odds with HM Revenue & Customs over unpaid stamp tax.

This indicates that they both want to postpone Sir Keir’s denouement until they are able to contest it.

    As Westminster’s tragedy continues:

As Keir Starmer works frantically to save himself today, markets are prepared for Labour to move sharply to the left.

Angela Rayner’s collaboration with Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and her program of increased taxes, giveaways, and nationalisations have caused anxiety.

Additionally, the former deputy prime minister implied that she had sided with Mr Burnham, advocating for his eligibility to run in a Commons by-election.

One of the primary ways the government borrows money, 10-year gilts, saw an increase in interest rates this morning.

Ms. Rayner accused the PM of not doing enough to assist “working people” and claimed that the Peter Mandelson case demonstrated a “toxic culture of cronyism” in a stinging 1,000-word sentence.

Additionally, the former deputy prime minister implied that she had sided with Mr Burnham, advocating for his eligibility to run in a Commons by-election.

Last month, the two were spotted having a covert meeting at her Greater Manchester home, raising the possibility that they were considering a “dream ticket.”

Ms. Rayner called for a wave of nationalisations, claiming that the government had permitted “wealth and power to concentrate at the top.”

She stated that her contentious overhaul of workers’ rights should be “just the start” and hinted at a drive for more taxes on corporations and the rich in order to finance assistance for low-income households.

She suggested that rather of continuing with “deregulation, privatisation, and trickle-down economics,” Britain should follow the lead of nations like Spain.

“We run the risk of turning into a party of the wealthy rather than the working class,” she continued.

Additionally, Mr. Burnham’s supporters have expressed their desire for widespread nationalisation.

Economists have cautioned that the left-wing contenders’ platform could cause market turmoil.

The Daily Mail was informed by a London hedge fund manager that “the sterling and bond market will get smashed if Rayner gets in.” It’s going to be the ultimate dung show.

In response to concerns on the Left that Blairite Wes Streeting is in a strong position to succeed Sir Keir in the event of an imminent contest, Ms. Rayner took action last night.

The claim that “no one in the City trusts Andy Burnham” has been propagated by Mr. Streeting’s group.

Ms. Rayner’s strategy, according to Simon French of Panmure Liberum, was “for an economy some parts of the Labour Party believe exists – not the reality of one where the tax take is already at an 80-year high, concentration of tax on high earners & on assets is already high by international standards.”

“Growth is obviously hampered by the frictions of the high cost of energy, building, and capital, and the minimum wage has moved much higher than the international benchmark.”

“I predict that the Gilt vs. Other Sovereign spread would widen rather than narrow if the Rayner statement became a comprehensive policy platform.”

Currently, almost forty Labour MPs have expressed their desire for Sir Keir to leave.

The PM should lay out a schedule for a “orderly transition,” according to Navendu Mishra, a former parliamentary assistant to Ms. Rayner.

Mr. Mishra stated that such a move would give the “best people” in the Labour Party time to “put forward their vision” in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

When asked if he was referring to Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, Mr. Mishra responded, “I think he’s done some really good things in my constituency of Stockport, and in Greater Manchester, and he has the experience of a previous Labour government, having served in senior roles including in the cabinet.”

He responded, “Look, I think she’s from Stockport… if you look at her achievements coming from Stockport, as a trade unionist, a Stockport trade unionist, I think are phenomenal,” when asked about Ms. Rayner’s possible leadership bid.

“Incremental change won’t cut it to meet the challenges that our country faces,” Sir Keir will remark in his speech. We need to respond more forcefully than we did in 2024 in the areas of growth, defence, Europe, and energy because these are not typical times. “Strength through fairness.” It’s a fundamental Labour claim. And the King’s Speech is a clear example of those ideals. And you’ll see urgency, hope, and precisely which side we’re on.

Sir Keir has admitted that the first part of his premiership was too depressing, with ministers outlining the dire situation of the public services and economy they inherited without adequately emphasising promises to make people’s lives better.

He will say, “People need hope.” “We shall confront the major obstacles and engage in the major debates.

“This Labour Government will be defined by rebuilding our relationship and by putting Britain at the heart of Europe,” Sir Keir will say, highlighting his attempts to forge new connections with Brussels. “Because standing shoulder to shoulder with the countries that most share our interests, our values, and our enemies—that is the right choice for Britain, that is the Labour choice”

Peter Kyle, the business secretary, was dispatched to TV studios this morning in an attempt to defuse the tension at the party.

However, by demanding that the PM stay in Downing Street for a further eight years, he ran the risk of escalating his annoyance.

Additionally, Mr. Kyle told Sky News that he went to the movies last week with Mr. Streeting. “Someone who is planning to pull the plug and launch a leadership bid in a couple of days’ time doesn’t go to the movies with a friend,” he continued.

When asked what movie they saw, he replied, “Devil Wears Prada,” subsequently characterising it as “good” and “fun.”

“Wes and I are very good friends, but I’m not going to fall into the trap of being his spokesperson, but what I can tell you is that he, like me, is focused on the success of this Government,” Mr Kyle added. He is there for Keir when he needs him, and his main goal in government is to ensure the success of the entire government.

Keir Starmer is under more pressure today following Labour’s crushing defeat in local elections.

There is increasing dissatisfaction inside the PM’s own ranks, with scores of MPs calling for his resignation.

Sir Keir is scheduled to deliver a crucial speech tomorrow outlining his “vision” for recovering Labour’s prospects.

However, Catherine West, a backbencher, is preparing an attempt to compel a leadership battle.

By asking MPs to nominate her for the party’s top position, she is trying to get the Cabinet moving.

Many believe Ms. West, who holds a seat in London, is an outsider for Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary. He might have an advantage against Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who is not already a member of the Commons, in an early leadership contest.

It is far from certain, though, that Ms. West will be able to secure the backing of the 81 MPs required to ignite a full battle.

How, therefore, could Sir Keir be removed from Downing Street?

    An official challenge?

According to the Labour Party’s regulations, prospective challengers may submit nominations if there isn’t a current opening for party leader.

Twenty percent of Labour MPs must select candidates to succeed Sir Keir.

Each candidate will require the backing of 81 MPs in order to compel a leadership contest because the party now has 403 MPs in the House of Commons.

If Sir Keir is challenged and wants to continue, he won’t have to look for nominations to run in a leadership contest.

His name will appear on the ballot because he is the current party leader.

A leadership ballot will be open to Labour members who have been members for at least the last six months.

The leadership poll will then be cast on a “one person, one vote” basis by both party members and linked supporters, such as members of trade unions.

A candidate will be proclaimed the winner if they earn more than 50% of the votes.

Votes will be redistributed in accordance with the preferences listed on the ballot paper if there are more than two candidates and no candidate receives half of the votes on a count of first preference votes.

In order to formalise their appointment as PM, the victorious candidate will then need to pay a visit to the King.

    A mutiny within the Cabinet?

Making it nearly hard for Sir Keir to continue might be a more effective method of driving him out.

He might be persuaded to go if a sizable portion of the Cabinet resigns or if the Parliamentary party experiences a massive upsurge.

Instead of having to band together around a single challenger, that would benefit rivals by opening the door for a larger contest.

When other ministers resigned in 2022, Boris Johnson faced a similar fate. “When the herd moves, it moves,” Mr. Johnson later said regretfully.
