The Batman: dark and gritty first trailer reveals The Riddler and Catwoman playing deadly games

Robert Pattinson transformed into the Dark Knight as the first trailer for upcoming reboot, The Batman, was leaked online ahead of its premiere at the DC FanDome virtual convention on Saturday.

The British actor, 34, looks ominous and brooding as he gets into character as caped crusader Bruce Wayne in the film, directed by Matt Reeves and slated for release on October 1, 2021.

From the opening few scenes it quickly becomes crystal clear the film has a dark and gritty look to it, along with an ominous, tension-filled tone that will keep fans on the edge of the seats as The Riddler and Catwoman play deadly games with Batman.

The teaser begins in a dimly lit room and the shadow of a man wrapping the head of a dead man with duct tape as eerie music plays subtly in the background.

That’s quickly followed by a close-up of the man’s head with: ‘No more lies’ written in red across his tape-covered face.

Gotham City Police Department commissioner James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) arrives at the crime scene just as Nirvana’s ultra-dark and somber song Something In The Way begins to play.

Batman makes his first appearance when Gordon asks him about a note addressed ‘To The Batman’ is found ‘from your secret friend’.

Inside it reads in part: ‘Lets play a game. Just me and you.’

Batman confesses to Commissioner Gordon that he ‘hasn’t a clue’, but fans can only assume with good reason that it’s the first of many clues from The Riddler (Paul Dano).

After being told: ‘You’re becoming quite a celebrity’, Bruce Wayne can be seen scurrying out of the way of a chaotic car crash on the bustling streets of Gotham City.

By the end of the clip there’s another letter addressed to The Batman.

‘Why is he writing to you?’ an unidentified person can be heard saying to Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Catwoman is then seen in action in a couple of clips which leads to several high-octane fight scenes involving the Dark Knight.

Eventually Batman is confronted by of gang of men whose faces covered with white  and black makeup.

‘The hell are you supposed to be?’ the leader of the gang asks the iconic superhero before going into attack mode on Batman, who promptly shows off his acrobatic fighting skills.

‘I’m vengeance,’ Batman answers back after giving him a vicious beatdown.

The teaser winds down with the Batmobile engaged in a high-speed chase through the streets where one criminal declares: ‘This guy’s crazy,’ with Batman in pursuit.

It ends with Batman taking off his helmet in yet another dimly-lit room, revealing a moody-looking Bruce Wayne.

‘You’re apart of this too’ another voice can be heard asking.

‘How am I apart of this? You will see.’

The Batman also stars John Turturro as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál; Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth; and Colin Farrell as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot/Penguin

Danny DeVito offered some warm words to Colin on his new role as the Penguin during a recent Collider interview.

Not only did Danny play the Penguin in Tim Burton’s 1992 movie Batman Returns, he also co-starred with Colin in the live action remake of Dumbo.

He shared that ‘I haven’t spoken to’ Colin after news of his casting broke ‘but I’m really looking forward to it.’

Danny shared: ‘I think that no matter what, he’s gonna be great because he’s a great actor. The only thing he has to worry about is that Oswald Cobblepot will show up at his house…’ he quipped, referring to the Penguin’s alter ego.
