The A1 is currently closed due to a significant collision involving numerous cars, with a lorry engulfed in flames.
A “severe collision” involving two lorries, one of which took fire as a result of the incident, and multiple automobiles was attended by emergency personnel.
At roughly 6:20 p.m. on Thursday, one of the lorries collided with the central reservation on the A1 (M) between Bradbury and Carrville from the northbound to the southbound side. The route will likely be closed for several hours. The crash appears to have resulted in fatalities, according to the police. It took firefighters over an hour to extinguish the flames.
“On arrival at the site, firefighters were confronted with a multi-vehicle collision over both carriageways and a big goods vehicle well alight,” stated County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue. Firefighters battled for more than an hour to put out the blaze.”
“We have multiple resources on scene, including our Hazardous Air Response Team, two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, and three officers, with support from the Great North Air Ambulance to treat multiple casualties alongside Police and fire colleagues,” a North East Ambulance Service spokesperson told Chronicle Live.
“We advise anyone waiting for an ambulance to kindly bear with us and not call us back until your health worsens in case your call hinders someone who needs our care from getting through.”
“It [the incident]included multiple cars, including two lorries, one of which caught fire as a result of the collision,” a Durham Constabulary spokesperson stated.
“Unfortunately, fatalities appear to have occurred.
“The route between Bradbury and Carrville has been closed in both directions. It will be closed for several hours as emergency personnel, including police, firefighters, and ambulances, work on the incident.
“If you are traveling this evening, we advise that you avoid the area and plan ahead.”
