Surfer dies in big swell at Sydney beach

A man has died while surfing in big swell at a Sydney beach.

The 44-year-old man was unconscious when pulled from the waves at Collaroy Beach about 12:45pm on Monday.

Bystanders performed CPR until emergency services arrived to take him to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he later died.

A Bureau of Meteorology warning for hazardous surf, with waves up to five metres, is current for the Illawarra, Sydney and Hunter coasts.

Police are investigating, and a brief will be prepared for the coroner.
