“She knew she was doing the wrong thing”

Jackie Hayes, 51, sexted the student and said she would have sex with him when he turned 16, an Australian court heard.

But, Newcastle Local Court magistrate Robert Stone said the disgraced teacher was remorseful and slapped her with a suspended 12-month sentence.

He said Hayes was unlikely to reoffend and would sign up to further psychiatric treatment.

Hayes, who was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, was disappointed in herself according to the magistrate.

She had pleaded guilty to the offence and blamed her behaviour on the weight loss drug Duromine for dramatically increasing her sex drive.

Lawyer Gillian Jewison said Hayes had used the drug for four months before she started messaging the teen.

There is no evidence the drug is linked to increasing sexual libido.

After being sentenced Hays turned to the boy’s mum and told her “sorry darling”.

Magistrate Stone said while delivering the verdict: “She knew she was doing the wrong thing – she knew it was very inappropriate.

“Children are to be protected from any sexual conduct – even if they are willing participants.”

Hayes was first charged in 2017 with five offences after she allegedly contacted two students.

Four charges were dropped after she agreed to plead guilty to one count of grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity.
