No one believes that the Met Gala is inexpensive, but this year’s ticket price has drawn criticism even by its renownedly high standards.
In comparison to the previous year, the cost has increased by an astounding $25,000, resulting in a going rate of $100,000. This is an increase of over 30% and significantly surpasses already skyrocketing inflation.
However, purchasing a ticket does not ensure a spot inside.
Anna Wintour must personally approve each guest invited to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the first Monday in May; Vogue is ultimately in charge of the final guest list.
Even if they could have paid the entire $100,000 personally, very few attendees are likely to have done so. The guest list includes billionaires like Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, and his spouse Lauren Sanchez.
More often, designers invite the celebrities they want to wear after paying for full tables, which are usually approximately $350,000.
Major fashion firms frequently invite A-listers as house guests. They arrive in bespoke ensembles from labels like Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton, and the brand typically covers both the ticket and the outfit.
Fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert started the Met Gala in 1948 as a midnight dinner at the Waldorf Astoria to generate money for the newly founded Costume Institute. At the time, tickets cost $50, or about $700 in today’s currency.
A ticket to the Met Gala now costs $100,000, an astounding $25,000 more than it did the previous year.

Now, the Costume Institute’s record-breaking fundraising efforts—which garnered $31 million last year alone—are supported by ticket and sponsorship proceeds.
Even yet, each name still needs Wintour’s approval, and Vogue controls the final seating arrangement, even though designers and sponsors usually buy entire tables and invite their own carefully chosen guests.
Sylvana Ward Durrett, the former director of special projects at Vogue, disclosed in the 2016 documentary The First Monday in May how meticulously those arrangements are prepared, including one stringent rule: “Never seat spouses next to each other.”
Meeting new people and being curious in what other people are doing are the main goals of these events. “If you come here to hang out with your husband, what’s the point?” she asked.
This kind of thinking explains why intimate friends, family, and co-stars are frequently kept apart, with tables combining actors, musicians, designers, models, and, more recently, influencers to foster new relationships.
The $100,000 ticket for this year includes much more than just admission.
A multi-course meal, a cocktail hour, and headline performances are provided to guests. Previous acts have included Lizzo in 2023, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in 2024, and Stevie Wonder and Usher last year.
Vogue hired James Beard Award-winning chef Kwame Onwuachi to create the meal for the previous year’s event.

Stevie Wonder and Usher last year, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in 2024, and Lizzo (above) in 2023 are examples of previous entertainment. “I was inspired by Black dandyism and the Black experience in fashion – it’s drawn from so many different avenues of the diaspora,” says Onwuachi, whose restaurant Tatiana was named the best in New York City by the New York Times. “From the appetisers d’oeuvres until the plated meal at the gala, I wanted to capture everything.
However, he maintains that taste always comes first. “We can be as poetic as we like, but in the end, it has to be good.”
During cocktail hour, visitors were served sophisticated soul food on silver trays, such as curry chicken patties, cornbread topped with caviar, micro chopped cheeses, and hoecakes with crispy chicken.
Dinner began in the Temple of Dendur just after 8 p.m. with cucumbers seasoned with Caribbean green and papaya piri-piri salad.
In addition to BBQ collard greens with bacon and cornbread with honey-curry butter, the main dish included Creole roasted chicken with lemon emulsion, rice and peas, and fresh spicy sauce.
Dessert, a Bodega Special Cosmic Brownie with powdered-sugar doughnut mousse and golden cake with honey-sweet cream and blistered gooseberry, brought the evening to a light-hearted conclusion. “All throughout the meal, there are different aspects of Blackness throughout the world represented at the highest level,” he says.
