Sailors are missing after a terrifying mishap involving a US Navy chopper And a huge rescue operation is underway.

A US helicopter crashed off the coast of San Diego, killing five people.

Around 60 miles off the coast of San Diego, search and rescue operations are underway to save five military soldiers aboard an MH-60S helicopter. The helicopter went down in the water. The helicopter is thought to have been “working on the deck before crashing into the sea.”

Following the crash, one crew member was recovered and carried onshore. He is expected to survive the event.

Three sailors from the Lincoln suffered minor injuries and are being treated on board the ship.

Two others were carried ashore for treatment after suffering more serious injuries.

“The Sailor who was rescued from the aircraft was taken onshore and is in stable condition,” the US Third Fleet stated in a statement.

“Before crashing into the sea, the aircraft from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 8 was operating on deck.

“Five more Sailors aboard the Abraham Lincoln were injured in the incident and are expected to recover.

“Two of the five Abraham Lincoln Sailors were taken ashore for treatment, while the other three sustained minor injuries and remained onboard the ship.

“An inquiry of the incident’s cause is currently underway.”

“One crewmember has been rescued, and search efforts for five additional crewmembers of an MH-60S helicopter embarked aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) that crashed into the sea while conducting routine flight operations approximately 60 nautical miles off the coast of San Diego at 4:30 p.m. PST on Aug. 31 have continued,” they added.

“Multiple Coast Guard and Navy air and surface assets are conducting search and rescue operations.

The 64-foot aircraft, which weighs more than seven tonnes when empty, crashed during “normal flight operations,” according to military sources.

The helicopter is stationed at Naval Air Station North Island on Coronado, on the USS Abrahan Lincoln, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.

“This afternoon, an embarked helicopter crashed into the water while conducting routine flight operations,” the USS Abraham Lincoln stated on Facebook.
