Rolex watch made for the SAS goes under the hammer and fetches top bid of £165k

A watch made for British Special Forces has fetched £165,000 at auction.

Only 1,200 Rolex Military Submariner watches were created for the SAS and Special Boat Service in the 1970s.

They have never been on public sale.

The watch is designed to withstand pressure on deep minehunting dives up to 656ft (200m).

Only 200  have ever come to light with the watch sold by Fellows Auctioneers in Birmingham dating from 1978.

It had an estimated value of £50,000 to £70,000, and was secured by an anonymous phone buyer.

It is the most expensive watch ever sold by Fellows.

Stephen Whittaker, of the auction house, said: ‘We are overwhelmed to have sold this magnificent Rolex Military Submariner for over £160,000.

‘This watch is incredibly rare and we had a feeling it would be sought-after but for it to break our house record is a huge delight.’
