Capcom, in a surprising move, have revealed a brand new Resident Evil game. However, for now, it’s only in VR and available in Japan.
The Resident Evil series is an absolute powerhouse these days. The series started off incredibly strong anyway, but after the fourth main entry it fell off a little bit in the eyes of many fans, so seeing the game return to form with Resident Evil 7 and then the Resident Evil 2 Remake was a huge relief for a lot of gamers.
Not only that, but Resident Evil 7 also happens to be one of the most intense VR experiences around thanks to its creepy atmosphere and the horrifying house in which it is set.
It was a truly chilling experience, and one of the first true games on PS VR that could adopt the air quotes title of ‘must play’ or ‘system seller’.
Well, in a move that has surprised nobody, there is another Resident Evil game in the works. Just not for us (for now, we hope).
The game is called Biohazard Valiant Raid – Biohazard is the eastern name for Resident Evil – and it’s a VR game that is coming to a VR arcade at Plaza Capcom in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan.
Unlike a PS4, Xbox One, PC, or even Switch you might have in your house, we’re betting you don’t have a secret door to Tokyo’s Capcom VR Arcade. Unless you do, in which case, congratulations.
For those intrigued further by the game to keep scrolling once you realised it’s not currently available for home console, here’s the gist.
The game supports up to 4 players in co-op and puts you in the shoes of a USS member who has to investigate an infected laboratory, because that’s something that has never gone wrong ever.
This little nugget was found thanks to Resetera and even includes a link to the trailer itself. Thankfully, we’re really nice and worried about how much extra web pages you have to open, so embedded the trailer for you to watch on this page.
It’s an odd little trailer, showing a bit of what looks like CG footage and not a huge amount of gameplay. There’s zombies (obviously) a rather angry looking Licker and amazingly Mr. X, just in the event you’re not terrified of him enough after playing the Resident Evil 2 Remake.
Of course, that’s all you really need to see to get excited, but then again, we aren’t likely to get our hands on it anytime soon, so this all feels a bit masochistic. Which fits with Resident Evil, on the whole, I guess.
There’s a slim chance that we somehow get the game over here, VR arcades are becoming more popular as the technology becomes cheaper, plus some of us have a multitude of VR headsets at home as well.
Well, unless you’re on Xbox One, who don’t appear to be in any hurry to adopt VR anytime soon. Even if they do it’s likely going to be some sort of Xbox Scarlett integration, possibly with Oculus Rift S if you believe certain rumours.
We can’t imagine that coming until “Holiday 2020” at the earliest along with the new console launch.
It’s just hard to imagine that this Biohazard Valiant Raid is going to do well enough to warrant all of the effort that would be involved in transferring it over.
In the meantime, maybe ask Capcom nicely and they could get the game over here, it’s not unheard of for fan demand to result in positive action. Just be nice about it, nobody treats a spoiled child.
