Vaccination campaign in Israel begins – Netanyahu the first to be vaccinated
At the start of the Corona vaccination campaign in Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the first to be vaccinated. The 71-year-old received the shot on Saturday evening on camera at Shiba Hospital near Tel Aviv. After that, it was the turn of Health Minister Juli Edelstein. On Sunday, President Reuven Rivlin is also to be vaccinated. The goal is to encourage Israel’s citizens to also be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Medical personnel and at-risk groups are to receive the vaccine first.
“This is a great day for Israel,” Netanyahu said before his vaccination. “I believe in this vaccine.” The end of the pandemic is in sight, he said, and millions of doses of vaccine are being delivered to Israel. He appealed to Israel’s citizens to follow his example. Around 60,000 people a day are to be vaccinated in Israel.
Austria’s tourism minister: ski lifts as safe as riding the subway
Austria’s Tourism Minister Elisabeth Köstinger (ÖVP) has defended the opening of ski resorts despite another lockdown lasting several weeks after Christmas. Cable cars and lifts will be allowed to reopen on Dec. 24, though the decision rests with the provinces. “We don’t have tourists in the country at the moment, which means we’re opening the sports facilities, the ski lifts above all for the locals,” Köstinger said at a press conference.
On Saturday, Austria’s new entry regulations went into effect, requiring entrants to enter a ten-day quarantine with testing options starting on day five, with a few exceptions.
A Viennese, for example, could also take the subway to the countryside on the outskirts of the city and go running, Köstinger said. “There is no difference in cable cars, gondolas, compared to the other means of transportation, so sometimes I honestly don’t understand why this is seen in such a differentiated way.” Safety concepts that require masks even when lining up for the lift have been in place since the fall, he said.
