A freelance photographer inside NBA’s Disney World ‘bubble’ has been booted out by the basketball association for sharing a sexist meme about Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Bill Baptist was working inside the Orlando, Florida bubble as an ‘independent contractor’ when he posted a doctored Joe Biden 2020 campaign image to his Facebook page on Tuesday.
The original campaign image features the words ‘Joe 2020’ written in distinctive red and blue font.
The altered image, shared by Baptist, instead read ‘Joe and the H*e’ – a reference to Biden’s recently announced running mate, Kamala Harris.
Baptist’s post went largely unnoticed, until it was spotted by female basketball legend Sheryl Swoopes – who shared a screenshot on her Facebook page.
She penned a comment beneath the offensive meme, blasting Baptist.
‘So this guy works for the NBA but covers the Houston Rockets. Has been around for a while. Even worked for the Houston Comets. It’s amazing how people will smile in your face but eventually their true colors will show.
‘@NBA and Houston Rockets he needs to GO!!! So disrespectful. Bill Baptiste (sic) shame on you!!’ she raged.
The NBA were quick to react – booting Baptist from the Bubble.
‘The photographer is an independent contractor and his services are no longer being used in Orlando,’ the organization said in a statement.
Baptist as a Houston local who has reportedly spent several years snapping photos of the Rockets.
He released his own statement with Click2Houston, in which he apologized for the post.
‘I deeply regret posting on my Facebook page a phrase that I saw and copied from others as a sample of some people’s reactions to Biden’s selection of Senator Harris as his choice for VP.
The phrase I posted does not reflect my personal views at all. I should not have been so insensitive to post the statements by others. I sincerely apologize to all of those who have rightfully been offended and I have taken the post down from my FB page. It was a horrible mistake on my part.’
