Over ‘exceptional demand,’ the hospital announces a ‘urgent’ emergency, and operations are canceled.
EAST Surrey Hospital has declared a critical incident due to high patient demand.
The hospital in Redhill has canceled planned procedures and outpatient visits. The problem, according to a hospital official, is unrelated to the fuel situation or any large increase in Covid patients. He did say, though, that the hospital is experiencing record demand for its services.
The hospital’s operator, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (Sash), asked visitors to “consider” before visiting its accident and emergency department on Tuesday.
It read: “Sash is quite busy right now.
“We strongly advise you to think twice before going to A&E.
“Most urgent but non-life-threatening injuries can be treated in minor injuries units.
“If you’re not sure where to go, dial 111 and a representative will assist you.
“Assist us in caring for people who are in need.”
Michael Wilson, the chief executive of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, is optimistic that the strain will be relieved soon and that appointments will resume as usual.
On Tuesday, he stated: “Outpatient visits and certain elective operations have been postponed due to extraordinarily high demand on our services, while our doctors and nurses work tirelessly to provide safe treatment for our patients.
At the moment, SASH is extremely busy. We strongly advise you to think twice before going to A&E. Most urgent but non-life threatening injuries can be treated in minor injury units. If you’re not sure where to go, dial 111 and a representative will assist you. Assist us in providing care to those who require it. pic.twitter.com/VckZWLuZPs “We anticipate that these services will be restored within the next 24 to 48 hours.” Any time-sensitive and cancer surgery is going as usual, according to the trust.
Those who have not been informed by the hospital should continue to show up for their appointments as usual.
Councillor Natalie Bramhall, who represents the Redhill West and Wray Common district in Reigate and Banstead, told SurreyLive: “East Surrey Hospital is a magnificent facility, and I’m confident that if they’ve declared an internal critical event, it’s due to a lack of resources.
“There are a large number of patients who come to A&E because they can’t get GP appointments, which exacerbates the situation.
“A few weeks ago, I was in the hospital undergoing surgery.
“It’s a fantastic hospital, and I was there for four or five days. It’s serene and well-run. You will be treated with respect and professionalism.
