‘Out of the question!’ Biden says of the EU after the ‘agreement’ on a Russian gas link is breached.

Biden slams the EU after the ‘agreement’ on a Russian gas pipeline is broken: ‘Out of the question!’

THE BIDEN administration has slammed the EU and Germany for their gas deals with Russia, and has demanded immediate action if tensions with Ukraine worsen.

If Russia renews its aggression, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has openly urged the EU and Germany to halt the project.

He also advised Berlin to use the Russian pipeline project’s certification as leverage to ease tensions.

“Some may see Nord Stream 2 as a weapon that Russia can use against Europe,” he continued.

In fact, Europe can use it against Russia as leverage.”

This comes as European gas prices soared above 30% this week, owing to persistently low supplies from Russia, raising fears of an impending energy crisis.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has diverted gas flow to the East through the Yamal-Europe pipeline, which normally transports gas to the West, for the 17th day in a row.

Meanwhile, fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine have heightened tensions with the West, with reports of 100,000 Russian troops massing on the Russia-Ukraine border.

Even in Germany, where there has been a reluctance to use the pipeline as leverage in the past, things are changing now that the coalition is split over how to deal with Mr. Putin.

Analena Baerbock, Germany’s foreign minister, went above and beyond Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s demand that the pipeline be treated as a private economic project.

She argued that Nord Stream 2 had clear “geopolitical implications” that Berlin and Washington had acknowledged in a joint statement.

“We agreed on this, together with our European partners, that if Russia uses energy as a weapon or continues its aggressive acts against Ukraine, we will take effective measures together with our European partners,” Ms Baerbock said.

Meanwhile, the EU has demanded a seat at the table during the US-Russia talks.

“It is out of the question — and let me make it very clear at this point in time — there cannot be a decision on European security without Europe,” Ms Baerbock said.

“It’s critical and pivotal for me to involve the affected European partners.”

“The delimitation of the sphere of influence of the two big powers does not belong to 20212022,” said EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell.
