Just one day after a Russian drone struck an apartment building in Romania, Munich Airport suspended all flights this morning due to a potential drone sighting.
Just after nine in the morning, two pilots at the south German airport reported seeing what appeared to be a drone.
“The security authorities then decided to close the runways in coordination with German air traffic control,” according to a police spokesperson.
It coincides with increased security concerns around Europe following yesterday’s attack on an apartment complex in Galati, eastern Romania, by a Russian drone.
NATO promised to “defend every inch of allied territory” after the hit, while Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga described Russian President Putin as a “real threat” to all of Europe.
The incident was the first time a drone had struck a heavily populated location in Romania during the conflict and resulted in casualties.
Seventy residents had to be evacuated after the drone struck the roof of a ten-story apartment building and triggered an explosion.
Just one day after a Russian drone struck an apartment building in Romania, Munich Airport (pictured) suspended all flights this morning due to a potential drone sighting.
Yesterday, a drone crashed into an apartment building near the Ukrainian border in Romania, causing an explosion and wounding two people. The result was a fire on the roof of a ten-story block of apartments.
After a Russian drone hit an apartment building in Galati, western Romania, police and forensic investigators looked at the impact site. “Russia’s reckless behavior is a danger to us all,” NATO commander Mark Rutte stated following a conversation with Romanian President Nicuşor Dan. “I reaffirmed that NATO is prepared to protect every square inch of allied territory.”
Romanian officials described the strike as a “grave and irresponsible escalation,” while Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said that Russia had “crossed yet another line.”
Since Moscow started bombing Kyiv’s ports across the Danube River, Romania, which has a land border with Ukraine of 650 km (400 miles), has seen 28 instances of Russian drones entering its airspace, according to officials.
Airport officials in Munich were so alarmed by the drone sighting that they quickly closed the runways while police conducted an investigation.
According to authorities, all flights, both inbound and outbound, were halted.
According to German media, the airport has since reopened.
Due to several drone sightings, Munich Airport was also forced to close in October. Flights were rerouted to nearby cities, affecting thousands of passengers.
