“No one can believe it”: The true tale of the school nurse who lost her temper and stabbed her estranged husband after he put her pets to sleep, as a friend describes how their marriage failed and what their daughters thought of it

Whether he meant to or not, attorney Tim Hunter’s statement in support of his client struck at the core of the legal dispute.

He said to the jury assembled at Norwich Crown Court earlier this year, “I dread to think how I would react if someone put my dog down.” “I’m not sure what you think of someone who responded the way Claire did.”

The “Claire” he mentioned is Claire Bridger, a 64-year-old school nurse and mother of two who was well-liked by her neighbours in the Norfolk village of Taverham and had no criminal records prior to last summer.

All of that changed in July of last year when Claire found out that her estranged husband, Keith, had put the couple’s two dachshunds, Violet and Dorothy—what she called “my girls” in court—to sleep.

Claire reacted to the discovery in a startling and horrifying way.

She screamed, “You’ve killed my dogs,” and lunged at Keith with a kitchen knife, stabbing him twice in the chest and abdomen in the moments after he told her the news.

Although Keith, 63, survived the assault, he suffered a punctured lung and life-threatening injuries from his wife of 30 years.

Had Claire been so enraged by the news of her cherished rescue pups’ fate that she planned to murder him? Was that “the straw that broke the camel’s back,” as her defence attorney described it?

Because “Claire adored the two dogs more than I can describe,” a source familiar with the family told the Daily Mail this week.

Claire Bridger, 64, used a kitchen knife to stab her estranged husband in the chest and abdomen after learning that he had put their dachshunds Violet and Dorothy to sleep.

After Claire was accused of attempted murder in January, a jury was asked the question. After less than three hours of deliberation, she was found not guilty after a week-long trial.

However, after entering a guilty plea to wounding with intent, she was sentenced to three years in jail and was informed yesterday that she would be sent back to HMP Peterborough, the prison where she has been on remand since her arrest last year.

Judge Katharine Moore acknowledged that Bridger had no intention of wielding the kitchen knife that evening when she sentenced her at Norwich Crown Court.

Hello, I’m The Crime Desk’s editor, Alex Matthews.

Given that Claire’s two adult daughters—one a model and the other a midwife—no longer communicate with her, this is clearly a tragic turn of events for all parties involved and has caused a severe rift in the Bridger family.

The Daily Mail was informed by the source that “no one who knows Claire can really believe what has happened.” All of this would be unimaginable if you were to go back a year.

“Now that Claire is incarcerated, she is cut off from her daughters.”

According to the source, Claire’s behaviour was completely out of character. Claire is not at all a problem drinker, but it seemed like the prosecution was attempting to portray her as such. Like most of us, she drinks in social situations.

Those who know her have also expressed disappointment over the rejection of Claire’s initial guilty plea to the lesser charge of GBH.

Although Keith Bridger’s injuries caused him “unrelenting pain,” he told the court that his psychological ailments were more severe.

In an impact statement, he said that after the attack, he had lost weight and experienced hand tremors that made even basic chores like pressing a button challenging. “I have nightmares and flashbacks,” he claimed. I wake up in a fright and a chilly sweat.

According to a source, Claire was aware that what she had done was wrong.

“This court case and [the subsequent] media interest attracted a huge online backlash, even though she always accepted that she would be punished and accepted responsibility immediately.”

Undoubtedly, this once-normal family is now being discussed online all around the world, with commentators divided between pity for Claire’s suffering and shock that anyone could endanger a human life over a dog.

Claire, the youngest of six children raised in the Midlands, relocated to London in her early twenties to work in the hospitality sector. She eventually rose to the position of lead housekeeper at the Savoy and later worked in Bermuda. She met Keith through a mutual friend while she was in her late 20s, and the two was married in 1995.

The source continued, “He was Claire’s choice and she loved him a great deal, even though the family didn’t bond closely with him.”

Soon after they were married, their daughters arrived. After completing her nursing training, Claire worked as an auxiliary nurse and later as a school health visitor, supervising the examination of children’s eyes and ears. One of her coworkers told the Daily Mail this week that “everyone loves her.” People continue to enquire about her. They are in shock at what has transpired.

However, there were financial strains hidden beneath this seemingly happy family image.

The Bridgers decided to sell their house in Surbiton, southwest London, and move to Norfolk in order to help pay for Keith’s offer to purchase a franchise of the upscale Danish electronics business Bang & Olufsen.

However, the firm failed, and the franchise was cancelled, leaving Claire “as the sole breadwinner for quite a long time,” according to the source.

One of Claire’s siblings intervened to provide them with financial help, the court heard. However, they maintained their unwavering loyalty to one another during this extremely uncomfortable period.

Keith and Claire had been wed for thirty years. He suffered life-threatening injuries from her, including a perforated lung.

The couple chose to adopt Violet (pictured), a rescue dachshund, in 2020. Eighteen months later, they saved Dorothy. Later, it was reported that both dogs had behavioural problems.

With financial assistance from a family member, the couple bought a dilapidated home in Taverham, on the outskirts of Norwich, in 2010.

A family acquaintance told the Daily Mail, “Claire was advised not to take out any additional debt against the house and to finance any improvements in cash. It was suggested that the house be put in Claire’s name only, but Claire did not wish to emasculate Keith, so included his name on the deeds.” Sadly, after paying a builder in full, “the builder then ran off with the funds, leaving the house in a state… and of course they had no money to do it up.”

“They effectively lived in a building site for quite a long time, and Claire in particular found it a real struggle,” the family acquaintance continued.

When the couple decided to adopt a rescue dog, a dachshund named Violet, in 2020, just before the Covid lockdown began, people who knew them hoped it would be the beginning of a happier chapter. The couple eventually restored the house to a livable state with the aid of additional loans. Dorothy, another rescue dachshund, joined Violet eighteen months later.

As proof, Keith, who is currently employed as a car salesman, later said that Violet was “quite noisy” and that both dogs had behavioural problems, but Claire and Keith appeared to love them.

The person close to the family clarified, “They’re actually lovely little dogs, and there was never any outward indication from Keith that he was anything but happy to have them.” The court heard that the organization from which the dogs originated had promised to return them if needed.

In any event, the court heard that in April of last year, at a family breakfast, Keith said that he wanted to dissolve the relationship and would be departing with immediate effect, shattering what had appeared to be a period of relative quiet for the family.

The Daily Mail was informed by a person familiar with the family that “Claire was absolutely devastated and completely blindsided.”

She claimed that until Keith got up in the house and announced that the marriage was ended and that he was leaving, she had no idea what was going to happen.

“He returned home in his work van to gather his belongings and posted his keys through the letterbox after making the announcement.”

The knowledge that her daughters no longer wanted anything to do with her added to Claire’s confusion over the abrupt termination of her marriage.

The source clarified, “She spoke to them in the weeks that followed, but it became clear they did not want contact.” She was devastated by it. She doesn’t understand why this has occurred at all.

She struggled to deal with the abrupt dissolution of her marriage, as Norwich Crown Court heard, and was subsequently signed off work and provided anti-anxiety medication.

Since Claire continued to live in the family home, it was decided that she would take care of the dogs at first. However, because she worked full-time, she hoped her estranged husband would assist, and he agreed.

She therefore left the dogs in the care of Keith and her daughters when she moved home with her sister in May 2025.

Claire said in her defence that one of her children called her while she was away, pleading with her to return home because they would have to put the dogs down if they couldn’t take care of them.

One of the couple’s daughters and the pets. Claire was informed that if she didn’t return home, they would have to put the dogs down because it would be difficult to care for them.

After Claire attacked Keith, one officer captured bodycam footage of her stating that she “just saw red” upon discovering her pets were dead.

Claire told the jurors, “I thought it was nonsense.” I believed that no matter what, they would never put the dogs down. It wasn’t necessary. I believed it was an order to return home.

She thought that by giving one of her children control of the dogs, she would allow them to have their vaccinations while she was away.

In contrast, Keith stated in his own testimony that he had been unable to find a permanent home for the dogs and that his landlord had denied him permission to do so.

This leads us to the horrific events of July 17. At that point, Claire had returned to the family house and had begun to prepare it for sale. The dachshunds were at the one-bedroom bungalow her husband rented a few miles away that day.

After having a double gin and tonic with dinner and spending an hour on the phone with a friend, Claire decided to deliver two bags of her daughter’s belongings to her neighbour.

Notably, she drove off with a knife in her blue VW Golf estate, claiming it was a kitchen tool from a bag of trash she was bringing to the dump.

However, she chose to travel to her estranged husband’s house when her daughter wasn’t there, breaking their agreement not to speak face-to-face without 48 hours’ notice.

Her husband had just returned from a trip to the seashore and was waiting for her in the driveway wearing his motorbike jacket and helmet.

She told Keith that she couldn’t afford their next mediation session in what the court first described as a “civil” interaction, and he agreed to cover the cost.

If Claire hadn’t discovered she couldn’t hear the dogs and enquired about their location, that might have been the case. She told the court, “I just thought I couldn’t hear the dogs barking.” “Where are the dogs?” I yelled.

Then her husband said, “You know where the dogs are.” The veterinarians wrote to you. The dogs have passed away. I had them set aside.

Claire described what happened next as “like an explosion in my head.” She remarked, “I could see my feet getting out of the car and that was it.”

As her husband struggled to fend her off, she emerged from the car with the knife, which she claimed in court she had placed on the passenger seat after it had fallen out of the trash bag. She then stabbed him in the left side of his stomach and chest.

She then tries to bite Keith through his motorcycle jacket while yelling, “You’ve killed my dogs, you bastard, you’ve ruined my life,” as captured on camera by a neighbour.

A female neighbour said, “She looked completely mad and intoxicated.”

After a male neighbour took the knife away from Claire, she returned to her car with blood all over her clothes and was later taken into custody by the police. When she discovered her pets were dead, she “just saw red,” according to one officer’s bodycam footage.

Amnesia may have resulted from “a combination of alcohol and extreme emotional arousal” during the incident, according to a medical professional who conducted a mental evaluation.

Claire, who testified, acknowledged that she was the one who attacked her husband with a knife and that she had “intended to do him really serious harm,” but she argued that she did not recall anything about the incident.

Regardless of the facts, the violence committed that day was obviously unjustified: “No one is suggesting that she was justified in what she did because her dogs were put down,” as her attorney Tim Hunter stated.

No, not at all. Although it is believed that Keith has healed from his physical wounds, he continues to have PTSD. When the Daily Mail called him at home earlier this year, he refused to speak and appeared in court with his children apart from Claire’s extended family.

In the meanwhile, the result is indisputable: a woman who had previously led a spotless life now facing another term in prison, and a family has been destroyed. Even for the most ardent dog lovers, it is a significant cost.

This week, a source familiar with the family described the situation as “an incredibly sad state of affairs.” A sentiment that is undoubtedly beyond dispute.
