New Zealand distillery creates the world’s first BLACK gin

A boutique New Zealand distillery  has created the world’s first black gin – that changes to shades of red and purple when mixed with tonic.

The premium Black Gin from Scapegrace uses a unique mix of natural extracts to achieve the deep colour, including Aronia berry, saffron, pineapple, butterfly pea and sweet potato.

The distillery describes the gin as having ‘full-bodied florality with a menthol-like crispiness, a balanced citrus freshness and a hint of spice with a candied sweet potato and pineapple finish’.

Australian customers can purchase the product for $79.99 online at Booze Bud and at selected independent retailers.

Each ingredient is distilled at specific temperatures in a defined sequence to create the midnight black colour.

The vibrant red or purple tones are determined by the tonic used and the PH level.

Last year the gin was crowned the 2018 Best London Dry Gin at the International Spirits Awards in London and the distillery sold a three-month supply of the product in 24 hours.

The two business co-founders said they are ‘delighted’ to be bringing the gin to Australia.

‘This velvety New Zealand-made gin that will most definitely elevate your G&T experience,’ co-founder Mark Neal said.

‘Full-bodied on the palate, the signature serve is best enjoyed with a premium tonic and garnished with a slice of apple.’

The brand also produces pre-bottled cocktails and customers can purchase the full Scapegrace range at Dan Murphy’s.
