An Australian mother has shared the genius 18th birthday present she came up with for her son, impressing hundreds of parents across the country.
The woman posted photos of her clever DIY idea to social media, which saw a Kmart noticeboard arranged with a special message and five different gift cards.
‘Happy 18th Caylan. Treat yourself to something for the road untravelled, for your car or fishing. Enjoy now you’re 18 and legal but get home safe. Love Dad, Alicia and Ava,’ the sentimental note read.
There was a $50 Uber gift card, Liquorland, Rebel Sport, Coles and Mastercard debit card stuck to the notice, giving the boy freedom to choose what he would spend his birthday money on.
His mother placed the gift in the centre of their dining room table and surrounded it with an 18 balloon and a beer balloon from Big W.
The simple idea struck a cord with those who also parent young boys and find it difficult to know what gift to get them on special occasions.
‘That’s very cool. Great idea hun I might just copy it,’ wrote one woman on Facebook.
‘This is the best! I’ve taken a picture of your design so I can try and do the same,’ said another.
A third added: ‘Fantastic idea. Beautifully put together and well thought out’.
Using gift cards instead of putting money directly into a sealed card is a meaningful way of allowing the person to get exactly what they want for their birthday.
Some of the parents on social media thought it was a particularly good idea for nieces and nephews, if you were stuck on what they like.
